My 1st week of WW...
August 21, 2009 at 9:59 pm

My hubby and I went to our first WW meeting last Sunday. We got the monthly pass so we could have the eTools. I am amazed at how easy this past week has been for us. I used to be a calorie counter, and I never saw the point of joining WW because I always said it was just another way of counting calories. But I was wrong! For me, counting points is a lot less intimidating and stressful than counting calories. And since I don't know (and don't want to) how many calories my points are, I don't feel as restricted.

I have had some epiphanies this week:
1. I don't know as much about weightloss as I thought I did.
2. I can eat small portions of things and still be satisfied. AND that small portions are not diet portions, they are actually normal sized and I've just been grossly overeating for years.
3. I know how to eat in diet mode. I know how to eat in glutton mode. What I've been missing is knowing how to eat in "normal" mode!
4. I hate the gym but I don't have to go there. I can get plenty of exercise outdoors.
5. I deserve to lose weight and be healthy.

I FEEL A LITTLE GUILTY...I had 41 extra points between flex points and activity points. We went out for sushi today and I ate about 20 pts worth of sushi. I know I shouldn't feel guilty, but I do. I am trying to remind myself that what I did was okay, and we are actually encouraged to use some of our extra points. But in the past, what I would call that is cheating and so I would feel guilty. But I shouldn't, right? I get new points tomorrow anyway.

Wow...What An Inspirational Site!
August 21, 2009 at 9:38 pm

Hi everyone,

After browsing this site quite a bit, I feel very lucky to have found you all! There is so much motivation and inspiration here, which will be very helpful for me.

I'm 5'9" and have always been one of those people who tend to carry their weight "well," so I'd never actually look what I would weigh. I've struggled with weight most of my life, and have been as small as 118 and as big as 223. My weight has always varied depending on what I'd be going through at different points of my life, and that's because I'm an emotional eater. My obsession is with carbs/dairy/ sugar! Like all of these little happy endorphins are released whenever I eat any of those 3, and it's shameful :( I'd like little happy endorphins to be released whenever I exercise, but I'm not there yet.

I've never had a really healthy relationship with food that lasted more than 5 months. I've struggled with eating disorders most of my life and now that I've gained all of this weight (that I gained rather quickly after marriage might I add), it's really difficult for me to lose. It's not like the days when I'd gain 10 lbs and could lose it within the month and be back to normal size. I'm now very over weight, and it feels like such a huge mountain to climb to get down to even a once dreaded 160. It's going to be difficult, but I know that I can do it, and there are so many wonderfully inspiring posts here that I know can help me.

I'm very happy to be here :D

applebees calories?
August 21, 2009 at 9:30 pm

hey i went out with some friends yesterday ( went to applebees ) I ordered the bruchetta chicken sandwich ( foccacia bread bruchetta seasoning tomato's nd chicken breast with a small serving of fries ) i picked this based on the calories the menu listed .... but thinking back about it its almost too good to be true all that for 530 calories ? how honest are reasturants with thier calories? because if this is an accurate count they will be seeing more of me !

why give up and eat and eat.....?
August 21, 2009 at 9:29 pm

Hey y'all...

I've been chatting to some friends of mine over the course of the summer about their own weight loss progress (or not).

I thought I'd pop this question to y'all: why do some people just throw in the towel after losing some weight and then just eat and eat and eat for days/weeks/or months again before they get "back on the wagon" ?

I ask because a friend of mine has problems losing weight, but she would tell me how consciously, she knew she needed to stop eating junk but felt she was trapped and wasn't ready to start again, even though she didn't want to keep gaining weight. In a nutshell, she felt stuck.

Anyone wanna tell their experiences?

Is Yours OLD & WRINKLED Too?
August 21, 2009 at 8:39 pm

Boy mine sure is!

It could use some oil too...it has been a long time!

She hasn't been out to play in years.

What about yours?

Played with it lately?

Knucklehead nephew called tonight and said he is trying out for the NAVY softball team at his base. He told me he didn't have a glove but they had good ones at the K-Mart for $20...

I almost fell out of my chair! My first glove, a Wilson back in 1964 cost $30! I know because I had to earn half of it!

I told him I would send him my high school ball glove....started out for hardball and became a softball glove. I told him it was a Rico Carty glove...

he said..."WHO?"....

At first I figured it was because he never played baseball in all the years I raised him....mostly soccer and a lot of tennis....let's just say the kid couldn't catch or hit...we had to redirect his energy....:)

Anyway, I then figured out he didn't know Rico Carty because his last game was 30 years ago....

I pulled the glove down from the garage shelf...

wish I could still throw but the right shoulder has rotator cuff issues...

playing catch with my son a while back I had to have him slow it down because the ball would just "explode" when it got within 15 feet of me....

dang eyes going too...

the glove still fits...

but it's old and wrinkly....needs some oil...

how about yours?

I sure miss those days of catch with my kids...

so does my son....

brought that up the other night at the sports bar...

things change...:)

2 day fasting/detox plans
August 21, 2009 at 7:30 pm

I was just wondering if anyone had ever tried one of the 2 day detoxing plans, or had any good information on them. There are 2 that I have read about.

Apple Detox
For 2 days you eat only apples and drink plenty of water. It says to eat them as main meals, as well as for snacks when you get hungry throughout the day. They also say it's good to add a little cinnamon to the apples because cinnamon increase glucose metabolism.

2 day detox
This consists of a 128 oz. mixture of fresh grapefruit juice, orange juice, lemon juice, and water. You are supposed to drink 8 oz. every hour until the 128 oz. are gone, so basically you drink eight 8 oz. glasses a day. I'm assuming it's okay to drink water throughout this also.

If any has any information on this I'd really appreciate it. I'm assuming it's safe. From what I've read about fasting it's good to do every now and then to cleanse the body. I also read that fasting can help reduce cravings. I'm thinking about maybe giving one of these a try sometime next week.

August 21, 2009 at 7:21 pm

Hello everyone. I just joined yeaterday and im so happy I found this site. I actually found it through searching for a healthy grocery list. Anyway i have a few health related questions.

i was working out in a gym going through "bootcamp" when an old knee injury flared up and forced me to stop going to the gym. Im in physical thearpy now but does anyone have any ideas of some excersises I can do that wont damage my knee further?

I have switch from a 1800-2000 calorie diet to a 1200 calorie diet. I just started it but so far its not too bad. Im starting to feel what hunger feels like!

If anyone has any ideas or a good grocery list or anything that might help please let me know!

Thanks,
Fawn

Is It A Diet?
August 21, 2009 at 7:06 pm

I've been losing weight for about two weeks and I'm not on any particular program or what have you. I've been watching what i've been eating, cutting out really unhealthy things. Eating other things in moderation, eating more veggies, ect, not over eating, drinking more water. Basically common sense things. I feel like i'm not on a diet. Is that a good thing?

how do you "carry" your weight?
August 21, 2009 at 6:31 pm

this occurred to me last night. i had a friend over who is about 2 inches shorter than me and 20 lb less. we both were wearing sz 14 jeans from old navy and they were stretched to the max on her, but comfortably fit on me. she just all around LOOKS a lot bigger than me. how is this possible? is it a matter of how the weight is spread out over your body? she has NO butt, and mine probably is 20 lb, lol.

same with my sister, even when we weigh the same, she wears a bigger size. her legs and arms always seem to look perfect (seriously, even if she gains 50lb), but her middle section is the only part that gains and loses weight.

i store a good deal of my weight in my stomach, but not to the extent some people do where my legs and arms are still thin. its a bit more spread out. ive also noticed that whenever i tell people how much i weigh they seem shocked. they always say, "NO WAY! you dont weigh that much!" (geez, talk about a backhanded compliment). or tell me i "must carry it well".

so how do you guys store weight? and why is it that two girls who are the exact same height and weight (and neither of them is an olympic athlete or muscle woman) can look so different? is this genetic, or is it all about WHERE your weight is stored?

Day Out. Just wittering really
August 21, 2009 at 6:15 pm

My day off today so I took a bus to Ripon, about 2 hours away.
Last time I was there I thought it was a really nice place, I'd like to retire there one day. It didn't seem quite as nice today. Mind you, I was last there with the Silent One, still silent after 6 weeks. I'm not pining. I've asked myself whether I'd be happier now if I'd just let him carry on wiping his feet on me, and the answer is a resounding no for this rose blossom; but I miss the company sometimes, I guess we got on well 80% of the time.

One thing I went to do was to practise going into a restaurant to have a meal; not a cafe in a store, a real restaurant. I can be quite shy about that, so I was practising for Paris. Managed that, and it was a nice fishcake too.

Negatives: I went out looking ho-o-t - so I was deflated when a kind shop assistant called me 'my love' and the 20-something bus driver called me 'dear'. I suddenly felt like and old lady with permed hair. Poo.

Posivite: I went into the Bon Marche clothes shop (don't know if it's in the States? very cheapncheerful, used to be for old ladies with permed hair but has got a lot younger recently; or maybe I AM an oldy lady with permed hair.....) I'm looking for a navy blue pair for Paris. I thought I'd try on a UK16, knowing it'd be tight but Paris is still 8 weeks away, worth a try. Chickies, I had to go back for a UK14!!!!! They looked so good, I tore off the label for the guy to put through the till and just wore them home. UK14!! Now, I'm not being a killjoy when I say they were obviously cut large, they truly were - but I love that I bought a UK14!

Mixed day.

Bob Harper goes Vegetarian, Cholesterol drops

According to September 2009 edition of Vegetarian Times, Bob Harper is now vegetarian. As a result, his cholesterol dropped 100 points.

He cites his inspiration as Skinny ***** (ugh!) and Engine 2 Diet (very good).

Short or long nails?

APPROVED......now what...
August 21, 2009 at 5:43 pm

Hello everyone,

Well, I called insurance today to see if they needed any more info and answer any questions they have. Well, the gal said I was approved this morning. Wow, did not expect that.

So now I am excited and scared to death at the same time. Its hard to bounce with excitement when I know there is risk and my life is about to be very different. Not to mention how big of a coward I am.

That being said….I am grateful for this chance. Grateful to God for opening doors. Grateful that I have insurance and can have this. Grateful to all of you who prayed for Gods will to be done and kept me in your prayers and thoughts. Thanks guys!! (((hug)))

WOW….my mind has to catch up to this.

Less than 100 pounds to go
August 21, 2009 at 5:18 pm

Because I always need something to look forward to, I have a list of mini-goals a mile long. I hit the latest one today. I have less than 100 pounds left to go. Two digits just feels so much more doable than three ever did (especially the high three's). I feel like I can do this and that feels great.

I was looking at some of the other goals I have on my list that are so much closer than I imagined I'd ever be to them and again, it gives me hope. I'm 44 pounds from no longer being obese. I'm 13 pounds from being half way to my goal. I'm 25.4 pounds from having lost 100 pounds. And all of those feel completely reachable. If I'm overwhelmed, I just change my perspective and focus on something really close.

If you are just looking at your end goal as the only milestone to look forward to, I highly suggest finding little mini-goals to look forward to! It makes the long road so much more interesting...

30 Somethings Daily Chat Friday 8/21/09
August 21, 2009 at 9:40 am

Morning all.

Had a few rough days, still fighting this darn sinus infection. I am now on a different antibiotic and  steriods. I have been so darn hungry. Not counting anything but just trying to eat healthy foods.

DD is still crying every night. Middle school sucks apparently! I know it's tough but sheesh kid your momma can't take it anymore. Plus she is just now starting to develop (ya know in certain areas) and I think her hormones must be going crazy.

Tomorrow we are going on a Christian Day Camp with church.

Hope everyone has a great day.

Mercury found in every fish tested in the US
August 21, 2009 at 8:56 am

Mercury-tainted fish found widely in U.S. streams
Wed Aug 19, 2009 8:11pm EDT

By Steve Gorman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Scientists have detected mercury contamination in every one of hundreds of fish sampled from 291 freshwater streams, according to a U.S. government study released on Wednesday.

More than a quarter of those fish contained concentrations of mercury exceeding levels set by the Environmental Protection Agency for the protection of people who eat average amounts of fish, the U.S. Geological Survey report said.

More than two-thirds exceeded the EPA-set level of concern for fish-eating mammals.

"This study shows just how widespread mercury pollution has become in our air, watersheds, and many of our fish in freshwater streams," Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said in a statement. The USGS is part of the Interior Department.

Goodbye 250s!
August 21, 2009 at 8:17 am

Its been a while since I've broken out of this decade. I have been losing and gaining the same 5 pounds for a while now.

I am so happy to see the scale moving! Goofball me thought of posting right away when i finally went below :carrot:

Accountability
August 21, 2009 at 8:08 am

Hi Everyone,

I'm hoping by coming here to the 3 fat chicks forum that I will find some people that I can be accountable too. I'm just so tired and frustrated with myself. I seem to have no control over food anymore. I just eat and eat until I'm sick, mad, and disguseted with myself. I've gained about 10 pounds the last month or so and my clothes are starting to not fit. Overeating doesn't really make me happy so I'm frustrated that I even do it. Right now I'm about 12 pounds above my lowest weight of this year and that just makes me so sad. I'm abusing my body with food and it's got to stop and it's got to stop NOW.

I'm 26, single and I still live with my parents(they are awesome!). For most of my childhood I was overweight. In 2007 something clicked and I dropped a lot of weight. By summer I was 127. That was such a short lived thing. Before I knew it my weight had climbed back into the 150's. Since then I've normally been between 135-145. This year I've struggled a whole lot with my weight. My lowest weight this year has been 138 as of late it is the high 140's and I think I even hit the 150's. I'm so scared that I won't be able to get this weight back off and that none of the clothes that I love will be ever fit again.

I need to get control and hopefully that control starts right now!

Bench Press / Pull Up Inspiration
August 21, 2009 at 7:43 am

I'm new to weight lifting (started July 15) and honestly didn't think I'd enjoy it nearly as much as I am. But I'm really starting to like it as a supplement to running and biking. It is totally different but still really enjoyable. :carrot:

While I started lifting mostly to try and maintain my LBM (since I'm still in a calorie deficit trying to get off these last few pounds), I actually find myself most motivated by the challenge of benching and trying to do chin ups/pull ups.

So now what I *really* want is to be able to bench 135 for 5 and do 5 unassisted chin ups or pull ups.

For my last workout, I benched 65 for 3 sets at 15, 12, 10 reps. For pull ups I am using the assist machine with 76lbs of assist for 3 sets of 12, 10, 7. I don't rest very much between sets.

What is the right approach to reach my goals for these 2 exercises? Should I try to do less sets with the maximum weight I can manage for like 3 or 5 reps? Or do I keep on doing 3 sets as I am, but with lower reps and more weight? Or is there some other approach that would be better for these specific goals? I don't have a clue.

Does anybody bench 135? Is that a totally unreasonable goal for me? I don't see any women at my gym benching, so I have nothing to compare it to. I have seen only one woman at my gym do a set of unassisted chin ups, and I was so impressed I wanted to stand up and cheer for her.

Any advice from you lifting mavens?

What to say when others gain weight?
August 21, 2009 at 7:31 am

I'm always concerned what people think when they haven't seen me in a long time because I have always gained weight, never lost until now. But now I feel good because I'm losing and I'm not worried about that nowadays.

But last week I ran into a friend who gained nearly 50lbs since I saw her 6months ago!! It was so shocking and obvious that I didn't know what to say. She told me that I look great and that I've lost a ton of weight but I didn't know how to reply in kind so I just said thank you.

What do you say when a friend gains weight quickly and suddenly?

Losing weight on vacation
August 21, 2009 at 7:23 am

Hello folks, I've been absent from the forums all summer due to a 4 week european vacation without internet. Good to be back.

Before I left I was petrified that I would gain weight on vacation. I knew my schedule wasn't going to be steady to plan exercise, and the food in europe is enough to make me gain weight just thinking of it.

I'm happy to say I lost 6lbs in 4 weeks! Ok it's not an impressive number but I wasn't expecting to lose any at all. I exercised when I could which was only 2-3 times per week as opposed to everyday at home. I was consistent with my calorie journal though and I think that's what helped most. I did not feel deprived of any of my favorite foods and ate mostly what I wanted in small portions. Here are some of the things I enjoyed on almost a daily basis:

French fries
bread
pork chops
cheese
fruit
pasta
fish
salad

And I still lost 6pounds!!! Plenty of desserts were thrown in there too. Ladies... it CAN be done.

PS - I will add that I did not partake in alcohol at all though.

Weight loss and psych medications
August 21, 2009 at 5:15 am

I have a form of bipolar disorder and I have been taking psychotropic meds for almost 20 years. During the course of being on these medications that keep my stable I have gained 75 pounds over the years. I am embarking on a weight loss journey now and would like to hear from others who have been successful and worked for you while taking psych meds. I currently take lexapro and lithium and I am in the process of weaning off risperdal. I am happy with my medications as they are now, as I am stable. I don't plan on changing my medications and I know I have a long road ahead of me. Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Going to give WW another chance....

...or maybe its just me I need to give the chance too?
After now being married for a year and have gained 50 pounds in 1.5 years..I really need to do something about it now. I have tried WW in the past and have been paying for it for years and not doing it. Hopefully this forum will give me the motivation or support that I need. 57 pounds to go!!!!

Finally Friday Chat
August 21, 2009 at 5:07 am

Good Morning Everyone:sunny:

Ahh...Finally Friday! I'll be off within the hour for my dark drive through the Rockies. I've mapped out my first Starbucks stop (Vail) then can make it to our other house where I'll drop the doggies off. It would be far easier to take them but we're going to meet DD for brunch and I don't know how hot it will be.

Raspberry picking, pick up doggies and back tonight.

Have a great day everyone and I'll check in on my return. I am so glad to have Alaska 2009 be a done deal and am excited to have the family back together for fall frolics.

Motivated and happy to be here
August 21, 2009 at 4:57 am

I am happy I found this site. I had heard about it on another forum I frequent. I am motivated and excited to start my weight loss journey.

I will be 45 soon and I am a mother and also a grandmother as of last year. I have had weight problems for most of my adult life. I have gotten to the point where my weight is interfering with my health and ability to feel good about myself.

I weighed 252 at the doctor's today and I have a goal to reach 192, I am 5'8" and I feel my goal is realistic and healthy for me. I simply need to eat less and better and move more....and yet something so simple is hard to do on a regular basis. I know I need to change my habits and from looking around the forum a bit I am sure that I will learn a lot about myself and make some weight lose buddies!

I have mental illness and have taken psychotropic medications for close to 20 years. I can point the finger at these meds being my biggest barrier to weight loss but I have developed horrible eating patterns and habits over the years. I also might have Celiac disease, which is basically an allergy to gluten (wheat and wheat by products). I have an endoscopy and colonoscopy in September and will be biopsied for Celiacs. The tests were also scheduled because I have had ibs symptoms for years and my doctor and I want to rule out and find out what is going on with my g.i. tract.

In my spare time I like to spend time with my granddaughter, read, write poetry, make jewelry and paint. I look forward to meeting you all and being a part of this site.

Using those extra points.....
August 21, 2009 at 4:15 am

I joined WW online and was kind of like "Aaa!!" when I saw the number of points I got....24.....that translates to roughly 1200 calories a day, right? I know that is not enough for me personally, at my current big bloated weight of 150 I could easily eat more than 2x that and not gain weight....

I noticed that we get extra points throughout the week....is it cool for me to just add five points each day to my plan and use them that way? I'd much rather do that than save up for "something special." Plus activity points??? What to do with those, seeing as you use all of your "extra" points before the activity ones? How do you plan accordingly :?:

Also....0 points foods like those soups....how do those factor in to your day? Am I over-counting my points? I have 18 more pounds to loose and I'm not really concerned about speed, I'd rather "retrain myself" to eat proper portions each day and loose .5lb or a 1lb a week than eat to little, drop it fast and gain it back.

Thanks in advance!!

LDL/HDL equation?
August 21, 2009 at 4:01 am

Can anyone help work out my LDL?

My current overall cholesterol is 5.9 but it hasn't been broken down into LDL/HDL.
The doctor says the previous overall was 6.1 and the HDL was 1.5 so ratio of 4.

Is it as simple as subtracting 1.5 from 5.9 or something more arcane?

I actually scraped the ice off the ice cream?
August 21, 2009 at 2:51 am

So I posted earlier and again I made it through the day until both my roommates went out. I hate it when they do that. I'm fine when they are here, but alone is when I mess up. So anyhow, there's nothing sweet in the house but I remember there is this really old gigantic tub of neopoliten ice cream in the outside freezer. So I scraped the ice off to get to the semi okay part to eat. Then I decided to liven it up so I wouldn't taste how stale it was by adding trail mix and peanut butter. However, because I peanut butter and trail mix are hard to get rid of (I'm bulimic) I added some vanilla soy milk and mixed it all together into a soupy disgusting bowl of mind numbing anesthesia.

The funny thing was I was googling eating disorder treatments in my area as I was gulping down this swirl of mush. God, I need help. What the heck is wrong with me. I'm only writing this so candidly because this IS the disease. This is how messed up it is.

Hopefully those of you who are abstinent from food addiction can read this and it helps them remember where they came from. Hopefully, me writing this makes me not sweep it under the carpet like its no big deal IT IS a big deal.
Anyhow, try again tomorrow.

Woot new pants and bra :D
August 21, 2009 at 2:17 am

My first mini goal in a month, I tried a size 18 pant today and they fit :D Not only that, I've dropped a cup in the bra too and finally able to wear garments from victoria's secret! Usually women don't like losing cup sizes, but for me, it was the most wonderful thing in the world to finally have a choice of wearing pretty bras that aren't from lane bryant! Does anyone else feel this way too?

I'm confused on how the calorie thing works...?
August 21, 2009 at 1:04 am

:?:Hi, I've been on a diet for the past 2 weeks and I did not lose a single pound. I eat 800-900 calories daily and I run 5-6 miles every morning. Then, I saw online that 1200 calories is the absolute min daily calorie requirement for the body, so my diet actually put my body in a starvation mode and made my metabolism slow down, instead of losing weight, my body clings on every bit of fat I consume.
I really want to lose 10 lb in a month, but based on the calorie system, it means that I need to eat 1200 everyday, but in order to lose 10lb in a month, I need a daily deficit of 1250, that is I'll have to burn 2400 everyday. That seems to be impossible. It's like running 30 miles. But then why can some people lose 10 lb in a month?
Am I calculating it wrong?
Is there any way to lose 10 lb in a month?
Thanks for reading this and please comment : )

Fell off the wagon
August 21, 2009 at 12:25 am

After only 2 weeks. :o

Not too hard, a cheeseburger and a milkshake yesterday, and today I haven't tracked my calories but made reasonable choices.

I think it was a lack of planning. I ran out of my "safe" foods as well as money in the food budget, was super busy, and had to wait a couple days to do a grocery trip.

Any tips on how to plan better in advance? I am ready to get back on the wagon tomorrow.

Thanks.

Weird Gripe ...
August 21, 2009 at 12:22 am

This is going to sound petty and nuts, but it makes me mad.

I came across an article on Stumble about the 20 most prolific serial killers of all time. So I started reading the short clips about them, and the first female (there were only two) bio HAD to mention how fat she was and mocked how she managed to garner suitors to kill them. I mean, she was a crazy maniacal killer, but they focus on her WEIGHT???? What the hell is that?

As I said, it shoudn't bother me considering what the article was about, but c'mon! There was no mention on how pudgy John Wayne Gacy was ...

Getting More Veggies In
August 21, 2009 at 12:18 am

I came across this recipe in another support group forum - sounds weird but it's really good - tastes just like ground up apple.

Green Cereal
1/2 c. broccoli (raw)
1/2 c. cauliflower (raw)
3 baby carrots
1 apple, cored
5 almonds, toasted

Place all in food processor and pulse until about the size of couscous. One VERY Large serving or enough for two to share.

The "inventor" ate this with soy milk, but I eat it just like a salad.

Acne due to weight loss??
August 21, 2009 at 12:17 am

I'm 18, I've never had acne,.. I've had a pimple here and there, or even a few at a time.. but never really bad.

I started this weight loss program, and have lost 12 lbs since Aug 3.

I've been working out a lot on a stationary bike mainly, and have done a lot of miles, and with a lot of miles comes a lot of sweat.

Ever since I've started the diet I've been breaking out REEEALLLY badly across my shoulder blades and a little down my back. I'm wondering if this is normal. And if so, I'm SOOO open for tips and solutions. :]

Pleeeease feel free to comment even if you dont have a solution, I'd like to hear your stories too. :] Thank you!! <3

Stability Ball for 300+
August 21, 2009 at 12:00 am

Hey everyone! I've tried searching these forums, and also searching online for a couple of days now. I see plenty of Stability Ball, but have not been able to find one that will hold my weight. (I see up to 250 only). I know they make them for higher weight, as they had lots of them at my old gym.

Anyone have a suggestion? Own one? Or just know of one that will hold my weight? (Currently 369);

Thanks so much!!!

24 year old mother to 4, over 100 lbs to lose in Michigan!
August 20, 2009 at 10:15 pm

Well, that is about it, isnt it ;) I am young, a christian, I live in Michigan, and I weigh 270 lbs. I weighed 317 when I delivered my son last August. I went down to 289 after and in February started a weightloss group at church. From Feb to April I went down to 253. I have now gained back a few pounds eating whatever, whenever again (summer bbqs every weekend!). I am done. DONE.

I can do this. My whole family is extremely obese, my mom is 370s. My husband is 160 lol. I dont want my kids to see me like this, and I dont want them to be over weight. (I have almost 4 year old b/g twins, 2 year old boy and a 1 year old boy) I can eat healthy, Ive choosen not too. I am choosing health now. I need to be healthy. I did it before and lost 36 lbs, I can do it again. I have My fitness coach for the WII and will use it daily.

I am the only one that really stuck with the weightloss group at church. It was male and female and a few of us did, but I was a food **** :) Fresh fruits, veggies, and meat. Little whole wheat pasta and virtually no bread. Yogurt, cottage cheese, and eggs. Whole wheat, low carb tortillas. I ate plenty of carbs, but they were from natural sources, not chips and cake :)

I am holding the weightloss group starting next week. I need to get things together, which is how I found this site. I have been very very encouraged reading the stories here. I love it.

Thats my intro, and I am sticking to it!

Veggie Replacement Powder
August 20, 2009 at 10:04 pm

I bought the veggie replacement powder the other day because I am so picky. Has anyone else tried it? And if so, is there a certain way you make it so that it tastes better? I've tried it with the hot cocoa and that was alright. I tried it as a smoothy today with some fruit and a creamy and nearly gagged.

Any suggestions?

So far, so good
August 20, 2009 at 9:42 pm

I haven't been working out like I should...my 8 yr old informed me last week "Ooooooh, you haven't done your workout in FOUR daaaaaaaaaaaays". It is true, but I have still been steadily losing.

In fact, I seem to be losing at a faster rate than when I WAS working out.

Just wondering if this happened to anyone else? I know anything is possible, but can muscle loss be a possibility in only 2 weeks?

I have been very active, shuffling the kids here and there, working on a large home project and I just cannot find the time right now. I just cannot believe I am only 11 lbs away! Although, I have thought about altering my goal to 125 which would give me 5 lbs to work with before I hit "freak out" mode at 130. I hope that won't be often.

Which brings me to another question...and this may need to go on the maintainers forum. Concerning the goal that I set, is that a good thing? How do I go about getting into maintenance? Do I continue with the calories I am eating now until weight loss just stops or am I supposed to be the one to manipulate the loss to stop?

So happy to find this site
August 20, 2009 at 9:07 pm

Hi There,

I found this site and am thrilled. I am in my early 40's, happily married with one child. I have been riding the weight roller coaster for the past 15 yrs and I soooo want to get off this ride. I know that it can't be just a diet for me. Been there (lost 90lbs) done that (gained 100back). :(

It has to be about health for me - emotionally, mentally, physically ... no more short cut diets for me. For this to work, I know it means taking my life back and putting me on the proverbial list.

I'm feeling very overwhelmed and a little scared. I don't need another failure at this. So ... right now, I'm going to hang around and take it one step at a time.

Thanks for being here

I'm very scared...
August 20, 2009 at 8:45 pm

I was told by my Doctor that I am borderline Diabetic and I was put on Metformin to control it. Now the next part is up to me and I am sacred to death. I am nervous and my heart is pounding with the thought of giving up all the comforts that my sugary sweets have given me through out the years. But then I think, look at what it has done to my body. I really do now believe that it is like crack. I just pray that I can make it through the next 30 days without breaking down and taking out a doughnut shop!

The all or nothing mentality
August 20, 2009 at 8:41 pm

Argh! I'm so frustrated guys! :stress:

I'm writing after a really bad unplanned binge and my stomach hurts so bad (I ate too fast and ate too much). I had made it through 4 days without bingeing (which was amazing for me!). I had even been eating a proper amount of food and not trying to survive on some ridiculous crash diet plan. I have a long history of over-eating (or not eating) depending on my emotional state and I just gave in to the craving to overdo it as i had an emotionally exhausting day.

Of course, I'm now thinking 'Ah well, you've totally screwed it up now as per usual, you might as well just eat what you want seeing as you have started'. I know I need to wakeup tomorrow and continue as I was but my eating disorder history means I have a tendency to try cut back food to make up for by bingeing.

How do I make myself do this?? my usual routine would be to wake up bingeing as I started it tonight or else wake with the goal of eating as little as possible (which as we all know inevitably leads to bingeing). I hate my all or nothing view.

Also If I continue with the healthy eating how quick will I return to my normal weight before the binge (I ate well over 5000 calories). Is it a matter of days?

I think I just need a great kick up the bum and for you guys to assure me it is ok to continue with my healthy eating plan without feeling guilty for a binge. :drill:

Losing weight too quickly..?
August 20, 2009 at 8:35 pm

Hi everyone :)

I wanted to know if anyone could inform me as to what is going on?

I don't quite know how to start, so I'll just say it. I lost 22 lbs in less than two weeks, which kind of alarmed me since I'm eating and drinking more than I have in my adult life. I drink around 7 glasses of water a day (whereas I used to drink only one or two), and eat about 1400 calories (used to eat 4-500).

I started eating a lot more carbs so I can work out harder, but I lost weight so fast I was afraid of getting sick so I stopped. I eat lots of raw veggies/fish/chicken/nuts. This is the same diet I used to eat as a teenager, but I've never been this overweight before so I don't know if its a normal thing or...? Any help would be appreciated :(

A brief introduction
August 20, 2009 at 7:15 pm

Hey everyone! My name is Kristine. I've been visiting this forum for over a year now, just to steal some tips and for inspiration (you are all superstars) and I finally put the time aside to make a username and to introduce myself.

I'm 18, turning 19 in a few months- heading off to my second year in University. Things have been crazy busy but I'm taking time to push myself to improve myself and take time for myself as well, on all levels. This is a great and fun way to receive and give support to all those who are pushing themselves to become their healthiest, most comfortable and most fabulous selves. I just thought I'd introduce myself on here because I plan on reading a lot more on here and posting a lot more. I hope to come into contact with all of you :). I'll probably be asking a crap load of questions, but I am hoping I can help and answer some of yours.

Ok now a little bit of weight history:

I've been overweight ever since I can remember. Same with my siblings. All chubby kids that were getting bigger and bigger with age. I have the "fat gene" as people like to say. However, my eating habits didn't improve either and I definitely wasn't active, so I can't just blame genetics. Anyway, throughout puberty, I got heavier. I was over 200 pounds in grade 8 and through most of high school. I fluctuated 10 or 20 pounds through silly crash diets or following Weight Watchers without being thoroughly dedicated during these times but it wasn't until the summer of my grade 10 year, where I worked at a breakfast buffet (Bad news... bad news. Delicious news, but bad news) and I was growing more and more stretch marks. Also, my older sister, who was nearly 250 lbs (same height), was seriously doing something about her weight, so this gave me a huge push. I can honestly say I didn't follow any diet at first, I just made healthier choices. And when you're used to eating two croissants, eggs benedict, bacon, tarts, fries and then a good hearty dinner each day, these little changes go a long way. I also have PCOS, diagnosed in grade 9, so I made huge changes with my GI intake. My doctor handed me this sheet about GI and foods, so I incorporated that into my diet. Basically I ate lean meats, fish, fat free dairy, plenty of fruits and veggies and low GI foods. No calorie counting, no nothing. But the more I lost, the more I altered. This is what I ate for the most part:

Mornings:

Egg white omelette with fat free cheese

2 pieces of pumperknicle bread w/ 67% less fat Becel

Coffee

Snack- 1 fruit, 1 fat free yogurt & veggies

Lunch- A small salad

After school (around 2)

A salad with some sort of protein in it

Dinner-

Some sort of protein and VEGGIES! Lots and lots of veggies.

I know it seems bland, but I ate a huge variety of veggies. All sorts of winter and summer squash, all sorts of greens, all sorts of cabbages. For fruit I basically stuck to an apple or an orange. When you eat like this, it really pushes you to be more creative with how you prepare- but this is what I ate basically. It was great. It worked for me.

So by the time the next summer came, summer of grade 11, I was 155 lbs. I lost over half of me. I maintained for most of the year, but once the next summer came I gained around 5 pounds and then University ruined it all... Hahaha. It does a lot of the time, right? With the boozing, late night cramming, crappy food... I was expecting it. I was at 180 lbs right when I finished exams in April. This bothered me. I only went up one dress size, but still. I felt like a balloon.

So, now I'm back at it. And it is harder than ever. So you know what I do? I turn to my weight loss goddess and genius, my sister, who went from over 250 to 120 lbs in a year. It's been three years and she's still the same size, only she is now ripped and she runs regularly. She wrote me out an extreme meal plan, because I want to lose this weight fast. I know that most people advise against this, but I know that I'm going to be dieting for awhile either way just so I can find a more balanced lifestyle that works for me when I get to my goal weight (135-125 size 4-6). Basically its a very low-carb, low calorie and high protein diet. About 600-900 calories a day, very similar to the Bernstein's diet. By Monday, it will be two weeks since I've started this. Before I started I was 175, I lost about 5 pounds SLOWLY over the summer. I weighed myself this Monday and I was 167. That's over 5 pounds!

Again, this is extreme. I know. But I'm not being a dummy or depriving myself of nutrition. I am also taking this vitamin which is amazing and that I highly recommend: Unbounded Energy. It's a multi, but its made from all natural extracts so you absorb most of the nutrients you need unlike most multivitamins. I also take extra B12 for energy, a Vitamin D tablet for overall health and 2 chromium in the morning. These vitamins make a HUGE difference.

Anyway, that's it for me. I hope I get some responses so I can be acquainted with a few of you. You are all an inspiration to me.

You guys rock!

Help me brainstorm
August 20, 2009 at 6:43 pm

So I am contemplating what I might do this winter to provide momentum to keep my exercise going in the dark and cold. :) I tend not to exercise very consistently in the winter and think some sort of target to be shooting for might help.

I was hoping some of you could help me brainstorm. I walk for my primary exercise (can easily walk a 10k), love to hike and snowshoe, I have access to a very nice municipal fitness center or private gym for a price I'm willing to pay, I'm willing to consider buying a treadmill for home/indoor exercise, I like to swim but I'm not very good and I haven't done any sort of formal strength training in about 15 years. LOL

Here are some ideas I've thought about in the past or recently:
Training for another Avon Walk (I did 26 miles over 2 days in 2006)
Training to walk a 1/2 marathon
Joining a Masters Swim group
Just setting up or signing up for challenges like I have been here at 3fcs
I have flirted with the dream of doing a sprint triathalon but doesn't seem very doable to me right now

Other thoughts?

Hello everyone~ <3
August 20, 2009 at 6:37 pm

The truth is, I'm not overweight, at all. I'm 4'11" and I weigh 106 pounds.

But here's my story anyway.

I always weighed around 95 pounds, but I was starting to slowly but steadily gain weight. I'm a vegetarian, and I eat pretty healthy food, but I guess the cookies and bread were starting to stack up. I got up to 114 pounds.
It was... terrible. My skinny pants wouldn't close anymore, my shirts were tight and unflattering. Although I still wasn't THAT heavy, my clothes didn't fit anymore, and fashion is one of the most important aspects of my life.
I spent almost 6 months trying to deny my weight gain. Instead of pants, I wore skirts, and loose fitting tank tops replaced my tight t-shirts.

Then I said to myself: "What are you doing? Just lose the damn weight and wear whatever you want!"

I've lost weight before, I know how it works: "Eat less, exercise more", but the start is always the hardest part.

I started in July, and lost 4.5 pounds by... not doing that much really. I ate generally healthy, went rollerblading a few times a week, worked in the garden, danced (I love dancing~) and when I stepped on the scale, I'd lost weight. Great~ But I realised I had to do more effort to lose the next pounds.

The first of August, I departed on a vacation to Spain. Usually vacations are all ice cream and lazy sunbathing, but I decided to make it a healthy vacation. I worked out every day (just general exercises like crunches and push-ups, but I did them in the terrible heat! XD) and kept a food diary. I didn't count calories, just the foods, but since I generally know how much calories are in most foods, I would look at the end of the day and estimate how much I'd had. It was quite positive.

So, since the first of August, I lost another 4 pounds, bringing my current weight to 106 pounds. My clothes looks a lot better already (although I haven't tried those skinny jeans... my thighs still touch slightly =C)

So, my goal weight is 88 pounds. Is it possible? I don't know, but it doesn't matter, I just want to look perfect in every outfit, and that weight seems like the one that will achieve that goal. But for now, I'll keep my food diary, exercise daily, and see what happens.

---

So, technically, I'm losing weight because I want to be pretty. I realise many people are here because they're overweight, their health is in danger and their weight seriously affects their life. These issues are a lot more serious than a teenage girl complaining about being 'fat', I know that. Nevertheless,I hope we can get along, because we all have the same ideal: a healthy body with a healthy weight~

I wish everyone of you the best of luck in your journeys. <3

Starting Anew
August 20, 2009 at 6:35 pm

Hi,

My name is Alesha and I am starting a new life. I could write for hours about all of my previous attempts, and failures, at dieting but I am not going to. I just want to talk about who I am today and what I want to accomplish.

Today I am a married, twenty-something professional. I am 275.4lbs and 5'5. I need to lose 110lbs to get to my goal weight of 165.4lbs.

I am a young profession, which means that most of my day is comprised of sitting at a computer typing and talking away. I haven't had a very active life, so many things I will be learning or experiencing for the first time.

I am not sure which diet to embark on, but I think a combination of a diet, counseling and overeaters anynomous and this forum will help me achieve my goal.

Oh, I am also a diabetic with borderline personality disorder. The wrench that puts me on a very tight timeline to straigthen out my health situation. The depression comes and goes, but my new diagnosis has me more motivated than before to straigten up and fly right. I need the help of a friend. I need more motivation. Any ideas?

Great explaination

I was looking into this whole plateau, fat cell, water replacement thing and here is what I found: ;)

A biologist at Berkeley shared something very revealing on the low-carb BBS system about 4 years ago that helps us all through the erratic weight fluctuations you invariably encounter:
"Fat cells are resilient, stubborn little creatures that do not want to give up their actual cell volume. Over a period of weeks, maybe months of "proper dieting", each of your fat cells may have actually lost a good percentage of the actual fat contained in those cells. But the fat cells themselves, stubborn little guys, replace that lost fat with water to retain their size. That is, instead of shrinking to match the reduced amount of fat in the cell, they stay the same size! Result – you weigh the same, look the same, maybe even gained some scale weight, even though you have actually lost some serious fat."

This is what we have been telling folks. You lose inches but not pounds because your body plumps the fat cells. I tell them it is a complicated biochemical process that your body replaces the fat molecules with water and fluids until you exceed your bodies predetermined fluid level. Then your body will release a chemical that releases all this stored water and you get sudden overnight loss of several pounds. Then the cycle starts over again with inches gone and the scales lag behind.

The good news is that this water replacement is temporary. It's a defensive measure to keep your body from changing too rapidly. It allows the fat cell to counter the rapid change in cell composition, allowing for a slow, gradual reduction in cell size. The problem is, most people are frustrated with their apparent lack of success, assume they have lost nothing, and stop dieting. However, if you give those fat cells some time, and ignore the scale weight fluctuations, your real weight/shape will slowly begin to show.

Starting again on plan, i need help please!!1

Hi, years ago I did the Gold plan with Lites with success! (or what I think is Gold, been so long ago I forgot. Maybe it was purple?) Since then, I have gain some (not all!) weight and would like to lose it again and more. I have also lose my menu plan but I do remember what to take:

3 Veg
3 Fruits
2 Starches
2 Proteins
1 Dairy
1 Fat
2 LA Lites
3 Condiments

Anyways, since I lost the menu plan, is there anyway for those of you who still has the menu to tell me the foods and weight of each for me to take? If it's too much to ask, I can go to ebay and buy the purple one for 20 bucks (but i don't wanna spend 20 bucks :P).

PS. I would like to switch to the Gold plan w/o Lites. What's the difference in that?

FYI. I am 26 years old and would like to lose 30+ lbs. Right now I'm at around 160 and wanna go down to 130. Originally i was at 195 and lost weight down to 150. So, after a few years I ONLY GAINED 10LBS. This plan is awesome and easy! Anway, with those changes should I still be on the gold plan?

THANKSSSS!!!

Weeeeeeeeee, or should I say Wii!!
August 20, 2009 at 5:27 pm

I got my new Wii and Wii Balance board hooked up last night, but I was too hot and tired to use it. But I did early this afternoon, could only manage 10 minutes, but I wager that's pretty good, after only occasional walking and swimming as a work out.

Anyone thinking of getting this as a workout tool, it is well worth the investment. I had fun, and look forward to getting a friend of mine over here to try it too.

Hi, I'm new here and Starting EFS or FSD on 8/23/09
August 20, 2009 at 5:14 pm

I haven't made up my mind which one I want to start with cuz I'm not too thrilled about 9 days with no meat:D. IU wonder if Fish is allowed in Phase 1 of the FSD :chin:I'm waiting on the books to come in, I've ordered both and I'm thinking they should be here by Saturday. I'm going to do some food shopping this weekend also. I currently work out for an hour 4 days per week in the gym.

My starting weight is 233 and I am 5'11"...Let's see how this works out.:)

Year 3 Begins.
August 20, 2009 at 5:03 pm

I started this weight loss journey in August of 2007 at 278 pounds. I was sure I would have all the weight off wayyyy before now, but the journey continues...

The first year, I lost 64 pounds. Then it got tricky. I have binge eating disorder, and the emotional/mental stuff came into play. I spent the whole second year (since last August) battling up and down the same 20-30 pounds. I have yet to get back to my low of last summer, 214. I did spend a lot of time on the mental stuff though and feel like I am actually making progress.

So now I want to dive in and get the rest of this weight off. I cannot *believe* it is taking so long. I never gave up along the way. I have been trying all along. I have "dieted" so many times before but this time I really made life changes. I spent 2 solid years on becoming a healthier person, and this will be year 3.

Hopefully year 4 will be about maintenance.

Cooking for one...
August 20, 2009 at 4:48 pm

Hey there everyone!

I am a 24 year old girl living by herself who loves to cook but dreads cooking for just myself and trying to lose weight by limiting my calories. I am looking for some tips and/or healthy recipes for cooking for one. I need more recipes than just making eggs, which is my no fail backup plan. Thanks!!!

whats the difference? and which steaks the best

- separable lean only, trimmed to 0" fat, select, raw

and same would go for

Beef Top Round
and
Beef Sirloin tip?

Best, Cheapest Steaks? great for strongman/ bodybuilding?
August 20, 2009 at 4:33 pm

What is the leanest steaks that are the cheapest?

Is Beef Bottom Round Steak or Beef top round Healthier?

I am looking at 8oz raw for a meal?

or do you guys have any other preference with the same price tag that might be healthier, like a beef sirloin tip steak??

and can you include the nutritional value for each steak? for 1lb, or 8oz, either one?

I can see clearly now, the FOG is gone!
August 20, 2009 at 4:10 pm

This is finally it. Joined MRC last Wednesday 8/12/09 and began the preparation menu for 1 week. And yippy -- lost 5.5 pounds before I really even begin the real thing. How great is that? Starting at 243 and one week later to 237.50. So I am encouraged and really feeling like I can shed these 100 lbs. Officially begin on Mon 8/24/09.

It's not that I hate myself at this weight, but am noticing more and more the way I let it hold me back. And in my mind, I am still as active and ready to do things as I was in my 20s, but the body just does not agree at age 57!

Found that out the hard way last fall when I went with my friend, Rhonda, to kayak down Sugar Creek (never had done that in my life). She thought we should do the 15 mile trip -- !was on the creek for 9 hours! -- I thought I just might die by the next day! Crazy thing is, I really want to do it again.

Plus, I have always been a people person, and try to avoid running into anyone that has not seen me for awhile, cause I am afraid of what they will think. I hate that -- just not really me!

And then too, I am type 2 diabetic -- AND TRULY don't want that to be the end of me. So I feel finally ready to make some pretty dramatic changes like my hero, Rush Limbaugh, who lost 82 pounds just since March -- INCREDIBLE. Well, afterall, he is a man, so it may not be that easy for me, but that is fine. Taking it as it comes.

Want to be healthier, stronger, sharper, less likely to injure myself, and the last thing -- TOTALLY HOT! Seems like the fairest thing I can give my husband, so here I go . . . .

For those that don't know me... my name is Tammy and I've lost 142 pounds through calorie counting and exercise with a focus on whole foods nutrition. I've done this in less than 11 months so far and would like to lose another 85 pounds or so.

It's been suggested a time or two to come over and start posting NOW to get used to what living a maintenance lifestyle will be like :)

So I'm here and looking forward to soaking up all of your knowledge :)

August 20, 2009 at 2:42 pm

Hi everyone,

I've been hanging around 3FC and enjoying the environment of advice and support since June, so I figured I ought to say hello and begin to contribute!

I'm a 24 year-old student, and I recently uprooted my life in southern California to relocate across the country for the next five years of graduate school. I left my family, my job, and my live-in boyfriend; needless to say, it's been a stressful time of change and adjustment! I'm relatively new to 3FC, but I'm definitely not as new to fitness and weight-loss. My highest weight was in 2005 at 166lbs... for my body shape and frame, this was way too much: I was uncomfortable, fatigued, and just unhappy. I yo-yoed back and forth with 5-10 lbs for a while, and got more serious about my weight-loss in mid-2007. Since then I've been moving slowly along, and I hope to continue this progress here with you all :)

My first goal is to reach 134 - the lowest highschool weight I can remember. If necessary, though, I'll reevaluate along the way if I get to a place I feel comfortable. I've also been a vegetarian for almost 8 years, and will continue to strive towards my goal of eating more whole, natural foods. Unfortunately there are a lot of vegetarian junk foods I have a taste for (french fries and potato chips, I'm looking at you!).

Nice to meet you all, and I look forward to reaching goals with you!

Disney Trip
August 20, 2009 at 2:37 pm

My family is going to Disney in a few weeks and I was curious if anyone had been while on the program. I'm wondering if they let you bring your HNS (still packaged) and supplements into the parks. When we went years ago I remember them searching your bags when you entered. I am so hoping I can get the HSN inside!

New Girl trying to Break many Old Patterns!!
August 20, 2009 at 2:31 pm

My name is Maria and I'm from Colorado...it seems like I've started this path a hundred times before and honestly my mentality has been different at each starting point and although I have said it before I would like this to be the time I actually keep faith in myself and make real progress toward my goals! I like many have been a bigger girl since childhood, I haven't been smaller than size 14 since age 12. Much like my relationship with money my relationship with food has to change and now that I've really had time to work through my emotional battles I realize that I need to figure out what works for me...I've tried the different programs and although I've had success I still manage to revert back to old habits, I think I need to figure out how to have support without having to pay for it at every turn as that is for me at least only a temporary fix.
I'm hoping this forum can help me gain some strength and give me some keys to figure out what that thing is that works for me as a lifestyle change. I recently found out I have a sensitivity to gluten and since then have wanted more bread and pasta then I have eatn in the past few years! I tend to get a bit resentful at times that I have to work so hard at being healthy and this rings true for my emotional life as well, the work seems to be neverending at times. I have made so much progress but as I have let things slip I realize it really is time to get my act together again, I do know as a general rule in my life the happier I am, the healthier I am...this positive thinking stuff has some merit to it but can also be much easier said than done.
I'm starting at about 215 lbs and ideally I'd like to be around 165-175, although me and that 200 lb mark have had some real historical issues, that point is about where I fall off each time, if anyone has been in that place time and time again as I have I would love to gain some perspective on getting past it. :?:
Thanks for reading, I hope to learn lots from everyone!

Does anyone else hate random insults?
August 20, 2009 at 2:28 pm

So, yesterday I was browsing this store for a ball gown just in case my beau asks me to go with him to the Marine ball (He doesn't know yet whether or not he'll still be stationed here by then). The lady that worked there seemed really nice and was giving me different suggestions on styles, etc. Well, I find this beautiful dress and am about to go try it on when she crinkles her nose at me and says, "Oh no, honey. That's a dress for thin people. You don't want that one, it'll make any imperfections more obvious." Then, she stares at me for a few seconds with this thoughtful expression and says "of course, if you dropped about 20 pounds, it would look stunning on you. When's this event you're going to? Do you have time to lose weight? I know some great tips." She then proceeded to give me ridiculously stupid weight loss tips for about 5 minutes. I was so floored, I couldn't even think of anything to say. I just left the store. It ruined my whole day yesterday and I'm still kind of bleh. Why are people so randomly mean?

Cocoa Roasted Nuts/Seeds

ever feel burnt out from trying to lose so much weight?
August 19, 2009 at 9:53 pm

Hey y'all...

I don't know if it's the summer heat (90-some degrees here, ugh), but I've wondered if people on this forum just get burnt out with trying and/or losing so much weight.

Right now, I have to admit, I'm not enjoying the exercises I'm doing to lose weight, so I'm reassessing what other kind of exercises (i.e. circuit training, exercise bikes, treadmill, etc) I can do to keep the motivation going.

To be honest, the idea of doing "French Women Don't Get Fat" and just walk for miles outside instead of sweatin' it out on a machine sounds more appealing to me as of late, but I don't think it'll really help translate into pounds lost, just maintenance ;)

What do other people do when they feel like this?

weight "gain" & number of days for excess sodium to leave ur system?
August 19, 2009 at 9:38 pm

Hey guys!

I did check in advance before popping this question on the forum :)

How many days need to pass before the excess sodium gets out of your system (and you have a better idea then how much you weigh on the scale)? One, two, three days?

A friend of mine asked and I couldn't really answer, except I know you retain excess sodium for at least a day afterwards, lol :dizzy:

Vitamin C
August 19, 2009 at 9:32 pm

Hi,

Has anyone tried taking 4 grams of vitamin c a day, I heard it's supposed to help block cortisol. I am trying to get rid of my fat belly and fight metabolic resistance syndrome. I had heard that adding vitamin c to your daily regiment can help because of the blocking of cortisol.

Thanks,

Day 1, need supporters
August 19, 2009 at 9:27 pm

Hello everyone

As I said in my title this is my first day. I think I have done pretty well. I want to lose 75 pounds total. My husband is in Iraq right now and I want to get to my goal (or at least close) by the time he comes home (May 2010)

I was on Weight Watchers but was getting a little fast and loose with the rules and was not seeing progress like I wanted. I have heard about SB a million times but I have never tried a "low carb" diet, which I know this isn't. :)

I loooove all the carby foods. Especially bread. So this is gonna be pretty hard for me. I am planning on doing phase 1 for 3 weeks since I have more to lose than most. I read an article that said it was okay to do 3-4 weeks if you are over a 30 BMI.

I would love support and accountability. These boards are fantastic!

Today I ate:

Breakfast~protein shake
Snack~celery and organic, natural PB
Lunch~deli turkey, motz cheese stick (part skim), cucumber slices, romain lettuce
Snack~Sugar free jello
Dinner~Salmon and side salad with "spray" dressing

I also ate some yogurt and am wondering if it is "cheating." It is plain, fat free yougurt but I did not like the taste so I added a spoonful of sugar free jam. Still didn't like it. Added 1 packet of "truvia" and it was yummy! Lol. A lot of work for one cup of yogurt. It just got me thinking about why we can't just eat a cup of flavored yogurt because at this rate I am basically eating one. Or at least it feels that way. Did I cheat?

Also. . .I am a little uneasy about all these artificial flavorings and sugars. All the chemicals to make these foods "good for you." Does anyone else worry about this? I know I could find all natural everything but then what is left to eat these days? sad but kinda true. I don't know how many labels I had to read at the store yesterday just to find stuff with no added sugar (salsa even!) I just wonder if it might be better to eat flour and sugar but in moderation but at least have it be natural food not chemicals and everything.

Well I've rambled forever now. Give me any feedback you see fit. That would be wonderful!

Thanks y'all!

ammonia smeeling sweat and no weight lose in a month
August 19, 2009 at 8:04 pm

Hi,

I have lost over 90 pounds since last September and have been exercising (cardio) everyday as of 2/28/09. I am now up to 110 minutes of cardio a day, but for the past few weeks my sweat has been smelling like ammonia about 50 minutes into my workout and I haven't lost any weight in a month. I have a lunch with a mix of protein, fat and good carbohydrates about 30 minutes before I workout. I have read a few of the post about ammonia smelling sweat, but that happens to athletes that start burning muscle. But the problem is I still have well over 60 pounds to lose so my body shouldn't be burning muscle but fat reserves, RIGHT? What is going on?

I eat 1500 calories a day, 34 years old, 5'8 and weigh 200 lbs. I had blood tests done and my liver funtion is great.

Thank you :)

Finally!!
August 19, 2009 at 8:04 pm

Hi everyone! Am I ever glad to be here! I have been battling with my weight for most of my adult life and am constantly bouncing around the scale. I have tried many diets but can never see myself through to a goal weight. I have absolutely no will power and after a few months I go right back to my horrible eating habits and pile the weight back on and then some! I am so glad to have stumbled upon this site and I now feel that I can get on track again knowing there are so many people here that can help and share their successes. Here's to success! Have a great day!

Confused
August 19, 2009 at 7:50 pm

So my routine these days is like this -

30 minutes Gold's Gym Cardio for the Wii, 30 minutes free step with Wii Fit, 30 minutes My Fitness Coach cardio for the Wii. I do that 5 times a week plus 1 day I add weight/strength training upper body, 1 day lower body and 1 day core.

My question is, is this enough exercise to get results? Am I working hard enough? With the Gold's Gym Cardio, I do sweat but it is minimal. The free step I sweat a little more and with My Fitness Coach cardio I do a fair amount of sweating. I don't have nor can I afford a HRM or I would surely have one. So how can I know if I am burning enough calories? :|

Just starting Nutrisystem
August 19, 2009 at 7:33 pm

I am eagerly awaiting my first shipment of Nutrisystem (should be here tomorrow). I am curious as to the results that others had with this...especially in the beginning. Should I expect to lost a lot in the first few weeks and then slowly taper down to 1 to 2 lbs a week? or will I start out slow and just remain slow. Any helpful tips to this diet would also be appreciated!

Provencal-Style Fish
August 19, 2009 at 6:58 pm

Here's a delicious recipe my family loves. Works well with any mild fish--I use cod, scrod, tilapia or haddock. Don't be afraid of the anchovy, but you can leave it out of you wish.

Provencal-Style Fish
Serves 4

Squeeze the juice from half a lemon over one pound fish fillets that have been cut into serving portions. Sprinkle with a bit of salt and pepper. Arrange in a baking dish.

In a large skillet, on medium heat, warm 1 Tbs. olive oil. Add a teaspoon anchovy paste or a good chopped anchovy or two( you can leave it out, but this tiny bit really adds a complex flavor, not "fishy") two sliced small onions (or 1 large), 1 sliced sweet red pepper, and one stalk chopped celery. Let the vegetables soften. Add 3 cloves chopped garlic, 6 sliced black olives and 3 sliced large garden tomatoes. Cook for 5-10 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste and a handful of a mixture of chopped fresh parsley, basil, thyme. Let cool, then spoon the mixture over the fish. Bake in a preheated 400 oven 15-20 minutes, or until fish flakes.

Bad day
August 19, 2009 at 6:54 pm

My daughter has been sick for over a week now with a cold and some tummy issues. Luckily her doctor said if she's still sick tomorrow he will see her. Anyway I am just so worn out from me being sick and her being sick. I did NOTHING today. I even had a Klondike bar for lunch because I felt so tired and lazy! I don't even feel like cooking dinner, either.

Sausage and Peppers with Spaghetti Squash-Phase 1 and beyond
August 19, 2009 at 6:47 pm

I wanted to pass this recipe along for all you SB dieters-this tastes so good! It's one of my favs! The Spaghetti Squash adds a little crunch to this dish, but all the flavors blend so well.

Sausage and Peppers with Spaghetti Squash

You'll need:
1 lb. Turkey Sweet Italian Sausage-casing removed
3 sliced Bell Peppers of your choice-I use Green, Red and Yellow
1 onion- sliced
2-3 TBSP Olive Oil-divided
2 TBSP Italian Seasoning
1 14oz. can diced tomatoes
salt and pepper to taste
1/4 c. Parmesean Cheese
1 c. Part Skim Mozzarella

1 Spaghetti Squash- I cook this in the oven, it tastes the best!

How to make:

Remove the casings from the sausage, add olive oil to a pan and cook until brown, add the peppers, onions, tomatoes, Italian Seasonings, salt and pepper. Drizzle a little more olive oil on the mixture, bring to a boil, then simmer for 30 min.

While the sausage is cooking cut Spaghetti Squash in half, seed it and brush a little olive oil to keep it from drying out. Place in a shallow pan in a 350 oven for 30 min. You'll know it's done when the flesh starts to shred with a fork.

After the 30 minutes is up on the sausage, add the parmesean and mozzarella, cover and cook about 15 minutes more, enough for the cheese to melt.

After the Squash is done, I shred the flesh and divide it amoung plates and place the sausage mixture on top!

I hope you enjoy!:D

Is Biggest Loser Cardio Max high or low impact?
August 19, 2009 at 6:39 pm

I know it has "modified" versions of jumping jacks, jump rope, etc but if you don't do the modified versions would you classify it as low or high impact? I'm tracking cardio on sparkpeople.com but I can't figure out which category I'd put this into.

My husband, Tom Venuto and Weight Watchers.
August 19, 2009 at 6:35 pm

Mmmkay,

I'll get to the point. I was reading Tom Venuto's response to the Time article, which then got me more interested in Tom Venuto. I've heard the name before as the author of Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle. It never went beyond that because I chalked it up as a weight lifter's thing, something I wouldn't benefit from..

But now I see he has a new book out that's getting great reviews online.

Then there's my husband....
We both started taking karate lessons together about two months ago..he's over the mooon because for the first time in his life he's been able to build muscle ( he does other workouts, too, in addition to the karate ). Me? I'm probably a little smaller but nothing noteworthy, mostly just boob reduction.. My husband has practically no body fat, and I have enough for both of us...

I have been a fairly dedicated weight watcher for over 10 years....and I've been messing w/ the same 10-15 lbs for almost that whole time.
I"m interested in Tom Venuto's approach but kind of scared, too. WW doesn't seem to be working for me as it once did, probably because I'm discouraged and hungry and sick of counting.... but at least I'm familiar with it.

So, here's my husband who struts around the the cock of the walk, and as much as I'm happy for him, I'm a bit jealous, too....

What is the concensus about Tom Venuto's books? has anyone switched from WW to Tom Venuto's approach? Can the two be put together?

I'll admit that the reviews on amazon have me pumped. But the reviewers on amazon...I don't know them...and I don't know many of you, either, but I still trust your feedback.

Goal: Moderate Meals and Exercise.
August 19, 2009 at 5:28 pm

So, I'm not looking yet for a specific calorie or weight goal. I just feel frustrated that when I'm stressed I move towards food which doesn't make me feel better at all. It actually makes me feel worse. So, here are my two goals.
1. For a week I am going to eat three moderate meals with no snacking in between, even at night.

2. I'm going to exercise three times a week.

I want to use going to Vegas as an excuse, but why wouldn't I want to eat moderately there. If I start to go to buffet land then I'll surely only have a miserable time because all I'll think about is food and not enjoying myself.

Yay! I'm excited about this goal. Glad I found this site.:carrot:

Don Hewitt Dies at 86
August 19, 2009 at 5:20 pm

RIP Mr. Hewitt!

Don Hewitt, who invented '60 Minutes,' dies at 86

By DAVID BAUDER (AP)

NEW YORK — Don Hewitt, the CBS newsman who invented "60 Minutes" and produced the popular newsmagazine for 36 years, died Wednesday. He was 86.

He died of pancreatic cancer at his Bridgehampton home, CBS said. His death came a month after that of fellow CBS legend Walter Cronkite.

Hewitt joined CBS News in television's infancy in 1948, and produced the first televised presidential debate in 1960.

He made his mark in the late 1960s when CBS agreed to try his idea of a one-hour broadcast that mixed hard news and feature stories. The television newsmagazine was born on Sept. 24, 1968, when the "60 Minutes" stopwatch began ticking.

He dreamed of a television version of Life, the dominant magazine of the mid-20th century, where interviews with entertainers could co-exist with investigations that exposed corporate malfeasance.

"The formula is simple," he wrote in a memoir in 2001, "and it's reduced to four words every kid in the world knows: Tell me a story. It's that easy."

Hard-driven reporter Mike Wallace, Hewitt's first hire, became the journalist those in power did not want on their doorsteps. Harry Reasoner, Morley Safer, Ed Bradley and Diane Sawyer also reported for the show.

"60 Minutes" won 73 Emmys, 13 DuPont/Columbia University Awards and nine Peabody Awards during Hewitt's stewardship, which ended in 2004.

After Cronkite's death at 92 on July 17, Hewitt said, "How many news organizations get the chance to bask in the sunshine of a half-century of Edward R. Murrow followed by a half-century of Walter Cronkite?"

Hewitt often said the accepted wisdom for television news writers before "60 Minutes" was to put words to pictures. He believed that was backward.

A Sunday evening fixture, "60 Minutes" was television's top-rated show four times, most recently in 1992-93. While no longer a regular in the top 10 in Hewitt's later years, it was still TV's most popular newsmagazine.

CBS News "Face the Nation" host Bob Schieffer recalls Hewitt saying that the show tip-toes to the edge between news and show business, "and I know right where that edge is."

"Had he not been a television news producer, I think he would have been a circus ringmaster," Schieffer said. "Just this great showman. Don Hewitt understood that to tell the news, to get people to understand what they need to know about, you have to get them into the tent."

"You hear a lot of stories about him being flamboyant and being a showman, but he really was a great news editor, first and foremost," said Jeff Fager, current "60 Minutes" executive producer. "He always had the ability to make a story better."

"I learned everything from him," Fager said.

Upon the launch of "60 Minutes," Hewitt recalled that news executive Bill Leonard told him to "make us proud."

"Which may well be the last time anyone ever said `make us proud' to anyone else in television," he wrote in his memoir. "Because Leonard said `make us proud' and not `make us money,' we were able to do both, which I think makes us unique in the annals of television."

As executive producer, Hewitt was responsible for deciding each week which stories would make it on the air. Correspondents and producers alike would wait nervously in screening rooms for his verdict on their work.

Among his other jobs, Hewitt directed the first network television newscast on May 3, 1948. He originated the use of cue cards for news readers, now done by electronic machines. He was the first to "superimpose" words on the TV screen for a news show.

Before the 1960 presidential debate, Hewitt asked John F. Kennedy if he wanted makeup. Tanned and fit, Kennedy said no. Richard Nixon followed his lead. Big mistake.

"As every student of politics knows, that debate — like a Miss America contest — turned on who made the better appearance, not with what he said but with how he looked," Hewitt recalled later. "Kennedy won hands down."

Hewitt did not retire completely. In 2007, he produced a televised version of the "Radio City Christmas Spectacular," bringing the venerable show to a national TV audience for the first time — on NBC.

Donald Shepard Hewitt was born in New York on Dec. 14, 1922, and grew up in the suburb of New Rochelle. He dropped out of New York University to become a copy boy at the New York Herald Tribune. He joined the Merchant Marines during World War II and worked as a correspondent posted to Gen. Dwight Eisenhower's London headquarters.

After the war and a few brief journalism jobs, he took a job as an associate director at CBS News in 1948.

During his tenure, "60 Minutes" was often a place where people came to make news. Presidential candidate Bill Clinton addressed questions of infidelity in 1992, and Al Gore used the show to announce he wouldn't run for president in 2004.

Hewitt often said he was proud of his show's ability to exonerate innocent people through investigations, such as when a Texas man sent to jail for life for robbery was freed after Safer discredited the evidence against him.

When "60 Minutes" showed a tape of Dr. Jack Kevorkian lethally injecting a patient in 1998, it ignited a debate on euthanasia and the proper role of a TV news show.

Hewitt was the subject of an unflattering portrait in the 1999 movie "The Insider," which depicted him caving to pressure from CBS lawyers and not airing a whistleblowing report about the tobacco industry. The full report eventually aired.

Although bitter at the former "60 Minutes" producer who became a hero of "The Insider" for fighting to air the story, Hewitt later said he wasn't proud of his actions.

Hewitt had said he wanted to "die at my desk," creating a delicate situation for CBS. The show's ratings were declining and it had the oldest audience in television, as well as some of the oldest correspondents.

Hewitt, then 80, was persuaded to announce in January 2003 that he would step down at the conclusion of the 2003-2004 season, which he did. In return, CBS gave him a contract that would pay him through age 90.

Hewitt is survived by his wife of 30 years, journalist Marilyn Berger, two sons from his first marriage and two daughters from his second marriage. Berger, who worked for The New York Times, Washington Post and NBC, was his third wife.

AP Television News producer Faryl Ury in Washington also contributed to this report.

I'll keep this short and sweet. I'm almost at my goal weight and eat healthy throughout the day. Night time is so hard for me. I have trouble sleeping and all I can think of is to have a snack, which turns into another and another. I'm sure you know what I mean. I don't need to lose weight anymore, but would like to lose 5 more pounds to be at my goal weight. I have a small frame so that weight is good for me. Anyhow, I have tried other sites and have just felt so invisible and disconnected. I like what I've read so far.

I hope to find a sponsor of sorts, or a group that would like to make strong commitments and celebrate our successes. I don't mind e-mailing or yahoo chatting everyday or several times a day if possible. Success only comes for me when I reach out and realize I can't do this on my own. It is the support of you guys that gets me through those hard times.

Time article that exercise doesn't help ypou lose weight
August 19, 2009 at 4:51 pm

Has anyone read the article in Time about exercise not helping people lose weight on the average?

I feel it is misleading. Basically when you look closely it says if you exercise and then eat the fattening muffin which has more calories than you just burned off then you won't lose weight.....but the overall implication is that exercise doesn't help you lose weight. And diet is what is important.

How about if they stress exercise BUT DON'T eat the damn muffin and you will lose more weight??????? gads....

Also says that exercise makes people hungrier so they eat more...and I guess the tendency is to eat more than you burn off.

any thoughts?

couch to 5k? tell me about it...
August 19, 2009 at 3:56 pm

hi everyone. i'm looking to hear from people who have done the couch to 5k program. are you still running? did it work for you? worth a shot? etc. etc. i've printed it out, i'm just curious to hear real life experiences with it.

for now, i sit on my bum at a computer for 8 hours a day (work). then i go home and don't sit on my bum so much, but i for sure don't work on my bum either. ;)

i have a gym membership, so i have a place to do this in the well lit safety of a gym with a booming a/c. (that also means i have zero excuses...:o)

I've had A LOT of Pm's lately... so here's the scoop peoples
August 19, 2009 at 3:53 pm

So I’ve had quite a few emails asking me about meal plans, calorie counts etc. First of all… I am not a doctor or an expert. I am just a person that has happened to find out what works for ME to lose weight. So I cannot say that this plan will work for you. BUT it’s wholesome, sensible and operates on the basic principal of burn more calories than you take in.

First of all you have to find out how many calories a day you need to eat to lose weight. So go here
http://www.tlbc.ca/blog/index.php/bmr-calculator/
and follow their instructions.

To lose 1 lb a week you need to create a calorie deficit of 3500. You do that by shaving 500 calories off of your intake a day. If you want to lose two lbs you have to shave off 1000 calories a day. That SOUNDS like a lot… but really? Most people are eating at LEAST 1000 calories over what they should a day anyways…

So to start I ate 1800 calories a day. After losing 142 lbs I have gone down a bit to 1600 calories a day. You need to find the amount that works for you. If you are over 200 lbs a good place to start is 1800-2000 a day… under 200 you could start around 1700 and adjust from there. DISCLAIMER: NEVER EVER EVER eat less than 1200 calories a day. It’s virtually impossible to nourish your body properly at that low of a calorie level and even harder to maintain that calorie level long term.

I don’t follow any low carb, low fat, low calorie plan. I eat CLEAN carbs (meaning cut the white. No white sugar, grains, breads…) LOTS of protein and a healthy amount of fat. My basic macro breakdown looks like this:

Protein: 25-30ish %
Fat: 25- NO MORE THAN 30% fat
Carbs: 45-55%

I track every bite that I eat and plan ALL of my meals in advance. I use the daily planner at: www.fitday.com

And that helps me to make sure that I’m eating no more than my allotment and getting all of my macro’s spot on the night before.

I always try to pair carbs with protein or fat. It keeps you full longer. I have 5 meals a day and eat every three ish hours. That works out for me to be:
Breakfast 8:30 am
Lunch 12 pm
Snack 3 pm
Dinner 6 pm
Snack 9 pm

Eating often helps keep your metabolism up and keeps you full. You won’t succeed if you are always starving. I don’t cheat (a bite is a cheat) or treat (often.) But I’m not insane either. If I really really want something (not often) I will work it in to my calories. I’m not going to sugar coat it though… I daily deny myself things. DAILY. I prefer to lose weight over eating those chips… candy bar… drinking that pop. It’s a choice I make. I chose to be HEALTHY over instant gratification.

There is a detox process you will go through. But after the first couple of weeks you won’t crave the crap any more. I promise you.

Okay… nitty gritty. You want menu plans… I’ll give you a weeks worth of examples at 1800 calories. This is from when I was still having a morning snack which I recently cut out but only because it was a stretch to eat it midmorning.

I pair carbs with either fat or protein
I PLAN if I want a treat
I write my menu in paper as well and take it with me
I rarely eat out
I phone ahead when we are eating at family/friends and find out what’s on the menu
I pack meals/snacks with me where ever I go
I walk 4 miles three times a week and do yoga and heavy stretching 2-3 days a week.

So this is it. This is what I do. Good luck my friends!!!!

Must Refocus, Immediately!!!!!
August 19, 2009 at 3:45 pm

Im not quite sure what has happened to me, but I must stop and refocus immediately! Ive become a little bit relaxed and this does not need to happen. So, as of right now, I am re-commiting myself to do Rockin Robins famous words: "Do what works for you, then keep on doing it".

I re-commit to:

Use Fitday.com every day for all foods eaten!
Start cooking actual meals instead of snacking for a meal!
Start making the weeks lunches on the weekend!
Exercise every day whether its humid or not!
Drink at least two 16.9 oz water per day!
Stop snacking on junk food period!
Do not buy any more cereal, peanut butter, or low carb bread cause they are binge foods, big time!
Slow down on the boiled eggs with the yolks, I can easily eat 10 a day if I dont watch it...I know, I know!!:o:o

I CAN DO IT!

Does anybody else feel the need to re-commit?????
If so, post away!:D

Trading Bad Habits for Good Ones
August 19, 2009 at 2:39 pm

I've been thinking lately about how I've traded a lot of bad habits for good ones in the past couple of months. For example, I used to slather mayonnaise on my sandwiches, but now I've switched to using mustard instead. I've also totally dropped soda in favor of water. The hardest switch for me was cooking at home instead of eating out, but I feel I've adapted pretty well with that now.

What kind of habit changes have you guys made? :)

Never Give Up On A Dream
August 19, 2009 at 2:18 pm

If you have stopped by I would like to start by saying THANK YOU. I am someone who has battled weight all my life. My desire is to get it off for good!
I need to stop making excuses. I want to feel good, and enjoy life, I do not want to sit on the sidelines anymore. I am not going to use another gimic or weight loss product. I need to eat less and move more and make better choices about what I put in my body. I live on a farm, and there are no gyms for me to go to, no trainers for me to get tips from, mother nature has to be my gym. I am hoping to make friends here who understand what I am going through, I want to be encouraged but also to be encouraging. I am hoping to find people who won't put up with excuses from me and hold me accountable but not in a mean way. I am hoping to find people who want to be in regular contact, so we can support each other. I dont have a walking buddy to let down if I dont walk with them, but I am hopeful that if I am in touch with people on here I will feel like I let them down if I dont walk. I have over 100 lbs to lose, but I have come to the point in my life where I realize I can not dwell over what I did to get here and beat myself up over it, I have to move forward to my new life. Thanks again for your time. Have a great day!

Howdy Ya'll! :)

DDR for working out.
August 19, 2009 at 1:05 pm

Hi everyone =D

I was thinking about getting a ddr game and some pads for my PS2 and using that for my cardio for a while.

Has anyone had any experience with using DDR to work out? What games did you get and did you like them? One thing I'm really worried about is the DDR pads not working well because the only room available for me to work out in has carpeted floors...Has that been a problem for anyone before?

Input would be greatly appreciated! :D
