Pretty Much Everything we've eaten...
August 15, 2009 at 10:29 pm

Phase 1:
Breakfast-
Oatmeal- Cook until about 2 minutes before its done. I would put in fresh sliced peaches. Cook them in the oatmeal for a minute or two and then add some cinnamon if you like. We actually think it tastes a lot better than with sugar. Some other ideas would be bananas, blueberries, strawberries, etc. It's your breakfast, be creative!
Eggs- Make your life easier and get Egg Beaters. I just get the store brand. I would chop up a little bit of onion and bell pepper and put in there. Just like the oatmeal, you can put anything you like in this. Try it with some salsa on the side for an extra kick.

Snack- Usually fruit-bananas really help with keeping full

Lunch- I found this recipe online for vegetarian chili- http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/The-Bes...ld/Detail.aspx
I made this recipe three times so far! Its REALLY spicy so just be aware of how much jalepeno and chili powder you are using. Other than that its super filling and delicious. Since it has vegetarian burger crumbles, it totally feels like you're eating meat but its so much better for you!
Salad- Of course this won't be as filling as the chili but I like to mix it up. Put some beans, carrots, anything you like to make it your own. I like to eat my salad with an apple so I get some extra fiber.
Another idea is making a vegetable or some kind of bean soup.

Snack- Usually some type of fruit again. If I was still hungry I would eat a yogurt. Strawberry banana is my favorite! Another idea is hard boiling some eggs and just eating the whites. Good for protein! Pears are great as well. Some days you might feel just insatiable so you might think about drinking some herbal tea. I recommend if you are at the point of starvation (you shouldn't be!) try to focus on why this diet is helping you. There were times that I would think about all the junk I would eat at the current moment and realize that I would easily pass up fruits and veggies. Try to learn to enjoy different things.

Dinner-We had sweet potatoes and brown rice every night. We would pair it with either broccoli, corn on the cob, or asparagus. He's a little vague in the book about butter. We used what we needed for the vegetables and rice but didn't overdo it. I prefer to use some type of margarine because its less calories but its up to you. Don't forget to salt and pepper the rice. It really helps! Dinner was also when we would drink the milk allowance.

If you must eat out-go to Panera Bread. They have a vegetarian black bean soup that is very satisfying and good for you! We would pair it up with a salad-ask for no croutons or cheese and switch the baguette for an apple. We were FULL after eating this!

Snack- Sometimes we would be full enough from dinner so we wouldn't eat more than some fruit salad. I read in the FAQs that we could have air popped popcorn so we would eat that while watching a movie or something. We allowed ourselves to go get frozen yogurt when we went out on Saturday night. Delicious!

Just remember its SOOO important to drink a ton of water and get a LOT of rest. If you stay up too late, you might start thinking about bad things to eat so just dream about them. Haha, I had dreams about Domino's pizza, pasta, meat. It was weird because I would wake up thinking I cheated terribly but I never ate any of it!

Exercise- DO IT! Really, just do it! We've started switching up Wii Fit, jogging, fitness tapes, etc. Find what you like and get to sweating!

PHASE 2:
YAY MEAT! Haha...

Breakfast-
Cereal- Kashi Go Lean Crunch is a favorite of ours. It has more calories than most cereals, but there's a lot of fiber so you will stay fuller for longer.
Eggs- Use the Egg Beaters but put in 1 whole egg and scramble it up with whatever you like. I also add a little bit of cheese-YUM!
Oatmeal- Always a good option. I did it the same way with peaches and no sugar but add some sugar if you like.

Snack- Fruit again, usually a banana. I'm such a creature of habit.

Lunch- Salads are your friend! Try grilled chicken, tuna, or salmon in some greens with a healthy vinaigrette. A really good salad from McDonald's is their southwest salad, just pick out the Frito looking things. I also pick out some of the cheese to save me some calories and so I can have more with my eggs! Once again, its really spicy but we enjoy it if we have to eat on the go.
You could also make some brown rice with a meat of your choice and veggies
We've been eating that chili as well-its so good! Even better in phase 2 because of the cheese factor.

Snack- Same as phase 1, I tried putting a tablespoon of honey in my tea the other day- WOW! It was so nice and soothing

Dinner- I've been getting very creative with dinners. I try to take my favorite things and mixing it up so we feel like we're eating like kings.

"Chipotle" burrito bowls-I make Mexican brown rice- use this recipe, its really easy and I just half it since its just the two of us
http://www.medicinenet.com/script/ma...ticlekey=59780
Shred up some cooked chicken and mix it with a can of black beans and a taco seasoning packet with the right amount of water
Heat up a can of refried beans- whatever kind you like
Assembling- Put the brown rice on the bottom, then the beans, then the chicken. I then top it with cheese, shredded lettuce, salsa, and some sour cream. My husband went nuts when we ate this. Actually I did too because it was so delicious and super easy! Plus we only had one bowl and we were stuffed! Yay for leftovers!

"Burger" and "Fries"- We went to Costco and got some turkey patties. I cooked them on the George Foreman grill with salt and pepper for 3 minutes on each side. Top with tomato, cheese, and ketchup and wrap with lettuce.

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Take 2 sweet potatoes and cut them up to the size of french fries. Coat them with olive oil and put them on a foil lined baking sheet. Don't forget the salt and pepper. I like fresh cracked. Bake for 15 minutes then turn them over and bake for another 10 minutes. We dip them in low fat dressing.
I'm telling you, you will never miss the bread or white potatoes. It beats going out and spending a bunch of money too!

I also make chicken or salmon with brown rice and veggies.

Another idea if you must go out- We really enjoy the steak and shrimp from Outback Steakhouse. Just make sure to ask for a sweet potato with nothing on it and put your own butter on it! You wouldn't believe how much butter and brown sugar they put on it! I actually had mine plain because I just love sweet potatoes so much. We would pair it up with an approved salad and tell the waitress NO bread! You won't want it anyway because the meal is so filling. We brought back some steak to have steak and eggs tomorrow- YUM!

Phase 3- We're not here yet but we'll soon be there. I will post more of my ideas and recipes I find.

I hope this has been helpful. PLEASE do not hesitate to ask for help. I love it!

I've noticed myself in the kitchen a lot more than normal. Not only are we saving money, our waistlines are getting happier because of it. The cooking does take a little more effort but think about how healthy we are all eating. Very! Keep on smashing! :carrot:

EZ's "GO BROKE" CHALLENGE
August 15, 2009 at 8:31 pm

I mailed out a couple of checks today to Paralyzed Veterans of America and World Vision. I had a stack of mail asking for donations. I was unable to donate to all of them today. I debated on a couple of them and got to thinking of how much need there is in the world today.

Which gave me, I feel, a great idea for us here at 3FC....

What about a CHALLENGE where we give for our losses :)

I was thinking, at first, a dollar a pound to your favorite charity. It could be after goal or every week....month.

Then I thought of "time" given for each loss....volunteer work at the local school, hospital or library....the list is endless.

Or maybe a can of soup to the "families in need" pantry of your church.

I am not sure what I want to "challenge" myself with at the moment....but I will come up with something....

How about you?

The needs are endless....can you dump a few pounds to help someone out?....of course you can!

I challenge all of you to help me keep this thread going forever....:)

What Bra Size?
August 15, 2009 at 7:49 pm

So I'm in desperate need of a new bra. I think I'm between sizes but can't wait any longer as I've had to throw out my last white bra as the underwire was poking through. The size I was wearing is a 36DD but these are now on the tightest hooks and a little loose so I figured I needed to go down a band size to 34. However the current cup size seemed to fit well and the advice is to go up a cup size if going down a band size. So today I go out and purchase a 34E. I'm not one for changing rooms so I get the bra home, try it on to find out its too big, both in the band and a little in the cup. So where do I go from here. The range I bought does not do 32s in the larger cups sizes and the 32s only go up to a D cup.

My actual measurements are 31" underbust and 38.5" around my bust.

I know I'm going to have to try some on now but very confused where to start. Any advice?

Junked All My Diet Books!!!
August 15, 2009 at 7:14 pm

Today I did something I thought I'd never do. I gathered all of my diet books, put them in kitchen bags, and drove them down to my local library to donate them. I didn't realize how much I've been hoarding those books until I started hauling the bags in my car - 5 trash bags full!

Most of the books were bought within the last 2 years, which tells you what I've been going through with "diet hopping" in the last few years. High carb/low fat, low carb/high fat, raw food diet, Clean Eating Diet, Eat To Live diet, McDougall diet, Schwartzbein Principle diet... my head is spinning!!! Did I really get that obsessed with diets???

I think I've had some breakthrough of sorts that began a week ago. I went through 4 weeks of training for a new job plus doing full-time work, very high stress. I was already planning at that point to do a 14 week challenge just eating a raw vegan diet (all raw fruits and veggies, nuts and seeds, avocados). I thought having a big online support group would finally bring me success in taming my binge eating and help me lose these 35 pounds I gained in the last 2 years. The combination of the end of the 4 week training (which I passed) and the upcoming "diet" launched me into a 4 day planned binge. I was miserable the whole time but I just couldn't seem to stop myself.

On Monday, I started the raw diet and did fine for 4 days and then something just clicked. I dug into my closet and pulled out two cookbooks of vegan meals for one person. Looking at the cookbook, I thought, "these recipes sound really good and easy and balanced - and they're not a DIET, but NORMAL food (i.e., protein, grains, etc)."

So I'm now going to try an approach that terrifies me but that I've never done - just making simple meals, balanced meals, not thinking about calories or foods or nutrients. I'm not going to limit anything (except animal products which aren't a limitation to me, since they don't tempt me) and I'm not going to weigh myself or think about weight. I know that will come if I stop thinking in terms of "diet" and start thinking in terms of "healthy eating habits".

letting friends go
August 15, 2009 at 7:02 pm

When is it time to let friends go? I reconnected with a friend from high school a few years ago. She is not the person I remember (i.e., fun, kooky, accepting). Since meeting up with her again, we've gotten together a couple of times a year--generally around the holidays and to go to a movie and dinner. I've been disturbed by some of her comments, which when taken one way could seem pretty bigoted (e.g., she once made a comment about her boss that could either have been her blowing off steam at her boss or evidence of prejudice; I really couldn't tell).

Her comments about my life can sometimes be judgmental, although she might mean them to be supportive. For example, the last time we got together, I was telling her about my plans for a career change; she interrupted me to tell me that I was going to the wrong people for advice. When I was finished, she sat up straight and crossed her arms and made the pronouncement that, well, it seemed like I had a good plan in place, but that changing careers is scary (something I had never mentioned, by the way; I'm far more excited than scared about switching careers). It was weird.

Now she has a Facebook update that says that she got a catcall when she was out riding her bike and of course it was from some fat slob. I just cringed when I read it.

My gut tells me that she's an intolerant, closeminded person who I shouldn't spend time with, but my head tells me that (1) she is the only person from high school that I have any contact with at all and (2) *I* tend to be intolerant of people who don't share my social/political views. (I've been trying to work on that, but it's hard.)

Has anybody out there been in this situation? When do you decide to say when with old friends?

Virgin Coconut Oil
August 15, 2009 at 6:44 pm

I recently bought some of this at my local health food store to make some Indian food, but decided to do some research on it. I found that it's really healthy and an excellent alternative to products such as Crisco and lard. I'm going to make biscuits and pie pastry with it to see how it'll turn out.

I hit my mini Goal!
August 15, 2009 at 6:29 pm

I am so happy I hit my mini goal of loosing ten pounds, I know it's small but it's actually big thing. Thanks for making me feel welcome and I love love love this website

oh, hello there! i'm new.
August 15, 2009 at 4:39 pm

Hey everyone, i'm new here and i've been having a bit of a rough time losing weight (read as: i can't get motivated to do so). I'm 19 and starting my second year of college the day after tomorrow. I started being overweight when I was about 11, and weighed my most during my 11th grade year (186 lbs). Then I lost about 20 lbs. my senior year through dieting, then lost 10 more my first week of college due to me not eating. Then, I experienced the freshman 15, and gained even more weight this summer due to an ongoing stressful personal life.

Anyway, I'd really like to get down to about 135-140 lbs, as I'm tired of feeling sluggish.

Well, hi then. :D

Walden Farms products
August 15, 2009 at 4:23 pm

:?:Has anyone been using the Walden Farms products? (WF) I have used the salad dressings in the past on Atkins. I was told by the counselor that it was ok to use the products. I see that they are available in Publix stores in FL... I also found that they make more than just salad dressings... I wanted to by the ketchup, it also has zero fat, calories & carbs, but it does have 170mg of sodium per Tbs. I was hoping that could be an alternative to the tomato supplements. Anyone have anythoughts?

Also, they make BBQ sauce, and chocolate sauce that I can't believe is also zero everything too... that could be dangerous.

Thanks!
Carla B.

Grocery Staples
August 15, 2009 at 4:09 pm

I am going to do the grocery shopping for the next two weeks and have decided that I need to make a list and stick to it when I'm at the store. I have never been good at picking "healthy" foods, so I thought I would ask for a little help from you all. What are some of the healthy items you wouldn't be able to go without?

Water weight?
August 15, 2009 at 3:34 pm

Is it possible to put on alot of water weight? I gained about 17 LBS but still wear the same size I did when I was 207 and I'm 224.6 now? Some of it should be fat. I haven't been working out much so maybe I lost some muscle too.

Truth about six pack abs
August 15, 2009 at 3:11 pm

I saw this and with all the "everyone is doing everything wrong" hype. I wonder if anyone has tried this and if there is any truth to it.

Pull me back in kids!!!
August 15, 2009 at 2:55 pm

I think I have, at best, not lost any weight this week and I'm pretty sure I've put on a pound or two.

It's just been a crazy week. I do not want to make excuses but I do want to share what I've learned and ask for some advice along the way.

Bad choice #1: Youngest son wanted to eat out. I divided my meal in half and took the other half home. I was thinking one of my other sons would enjoy it later that evening but he didn't come home that night. So.....as I sat there watching TV (that room is open to the kitchen) I could hearing it calling me so I reheated it and ate it. Which brings me to....

Bad choice #2: In the evening I just need to stay out of that room! It seems everytime I'm there watching tv I ended up snacking! Since I have a tv in my room upstairs I have decided that is where I need to spend my evenings! It's amazing to me how just the proximity to the fridge increases my hunger?!?!

Bad Choice #3: Stress overeating. Scenario: I spent a couple of days with a friends DH who is dying of brain cancer. He is still at home and on many days does well but this week he had wandered outside and left the barn doors and gates open. She doesn't want him left alone (while she is at work) so I volunteered to stay with him on the two weekdays she was working. She has found someone who can start coming in next week so I won't be doing that again but on one of the days I was there she called to check in and was very angry at her DH because he had asked me to walk the dogs--no biggie to me, I like her dogs. Anyway, he was cranky for the rest of the day and when she got home we talked and it was all good. She was just stressing because she was having a tough day at work and it spilled over into their conversation. I spend time telling you this lenghty story because I can see so clearly how others peoples stress spills over into other peoples lives. There is NO getting around that! However, I could use some coping skills in this area and I'm very open to suggestions on that one. I can't begin to tell you how I overate that evening!

This last one is not really a 'bad choice" but I could use some advice because this is going to come up all the time. I had a meeting at my house last night for our neighborhood watch. One of my sweet neighbors offered to make a goodie for our mtg. Great, one less thing I have to do. I had no idea she would bring 3 full pans of goodies. And because there was sooooo much left over she wanted me to keep it for my boys. Well, they're not here as much since college has started, one just left, one lives on his own. And frankly, none of them are big sweet eaters anyway. So we all feel pressured to 'take something' home even though it's pretty apparent most of us don't want to. I immediately threw away what small amount I had taken. I don't feel bad about that, although I certainly would never want her to know. I did have one very small lemon square at the meeting and many glasses of water. She's a good cook!

Anyway, with the holidays coming up and my slips this week I'm starting to hear that conversation in my head that says I can't do this. It's just a bit of a whisper at this point but I sure could use some words of wisdom to nip this in the bud. I will say, strangely enough, I am trying to learn what works, I am trying to identify my triggers and come up with coping skills. I am NOT going to beat myself up over a bad week--no name calling. With all the activity this week I only missed one work out but I kind of knew that was coming so I doubled my treadmill walked one evening and I'll probably workout a little extra this weekend.

I don't want to hit that wall where I'm this close to quiting. Is that possible or is that just part of this journey? I guess I'm asking for advice to help me NOT go there. Am I in time???:dizzy: Or have I already gone there???:dizzy:

Thanks guys for listening! ;)

30 Somethings Weekend chat 8/15 - 8/16
August 15, 2009 at 2:32 pm

I didn't see a daily thread yet - so here it is. ;)

I am having a nice start to my weekend. DH got up with the kids and I took the baby into bed with me at 7. Baby ate, and we both fell back asleep until almost 9 when the aroma of coffee and pancakes wafted into my bedroom. Yum!

I took my measurements today and have lost another inch off of hips and waist in the last month. I weighed today to and see no change in 10 days. :( Oh well, I may have been a bit heavy today because I cashed in some flex points last night and had an extra piece of home made lasagna with home made sauce (tomatoes from the garden). It was just SO good. Well worth it!

DH went off to work and kiddos and I went to Wal-Mart. The big kids spent some of their money on a special outfit and the little kids took turns screaming. I didn't get everything on the list, but maybe I can go out alone for some things tomorrow - what a treat! :D

Here's a hug  for all of you who continue to be here to support me. I would've quit weeks ago if I didn't have this forum to come to!

Happy Weekend!
Andrea

progress
August 15, 2009 at 1:33 pm

I've been seriously losing weight again since July. I need some encouragement because when I took the pic I didn't see the differences that I *feel*

Can you tell?

I'm so exasperated!
August 15, 2009 at 1:01 pm

For several reasons I really feel I have no room to complain, but the past couple of weeks have been so hectic and draining.

My boyfriend and I drove out of state a few weekends ago to attend a convention. I was so not used to being on my feet, and about had an anxiety attack before anything had even begun since we had to park over a mile away from the thing and walk there in the heat. There were no real chances to sit down once we were inside, no good food choices to make, and in the back of my mind I knew we'd have to walk all the way back to the car in that blasted heat. Ugh! I still had a good time, but was exhausted for a few days with very sore feet and ankles as I tried to get back on track with my eating plan.

I think I've done relatively good with that actually. I had a few slip-ups, but feel I've been eating so much better overall than I used to. My food choices are much better overall and I haven't binged in ages.

Then I got called into babysitting for a few weeks. Which means spending ten hours a day in someone else's house that is over an hour away from home, full of unhealthy "kid-friendly" snacks and nothing to do but be on the computer, watch TV, and play video games (although on most days I've managed to get the kids out for a walk in the early mornings, before the desert heat gets too bad).

I've been really good about bringing my own food and not touching the existing junk, but there were a handful of times I woke up too late to fix my lunch for the day (now granted, I could have taken care of that the night before, but felt too tired) and we ended up ordering pizza. I honestly wasn't happy about that . . . it's just been really difficult for me to adjust being gone for 12 hours a day, and once I'm there it really, really drags on. They keep the temperature in the 80's inside, and the kids have no "real" toys nor do they even seem interested in them. I did get us playing Twister but they got bored less than five minutes into it.

So I went from losing about 7 pounds in one week to staying at the same weight for about a week and a half. I've been dying to just drop one pound so I'll have a change to record for the jingle challenge.

Part of me wants to give up, but I won't. I'm continuing with all my veggies and fruit. I'm still not drinking any soda nor have I been having any ice cream, candy, chips, etc. But I'm frustrated and need to vent; I just want to get this weight off! I still have a week left of babysitting, and I'm hoping I can adapt a little better this week and look into the Y membership I've been wanting once I have the free time again (I used to be a swimmer and would love to get back into laps).

And I feel I have no room to complain because at least I haven't gained anything! And while I still have quite a ways to go, I've lost a lot of weight these past few years and none of it has crept back up on me. I'm thankful for that. I guess I just can't wait for things to go back to "normal."

i'm not looking for perfection here, just better health, body satisfaction and to get rid of some of my emotional baggage.

Energy Burst Exercise for Higher Weight Loss
August 15, 2009 at 12:03 pm

I am interested to hear other folks' exeriences with HIIT (high intensity interval training).

I read about it a few weeks ago and started to integrate in to my exercise schedule. I have lost over two pounds in the past week and 3.5 in two weeks (after about six months of 35 plus weight loss). According to my home body fat scale, I also saw a decrease in fat versus muscle. In July, I was slowing down with loss because I had a week of "required no exercise" following a minor surgery on my back, then struggled to keep up with hip pain for a couple weeks.

For the last two full weeks, I've done three HIIT sessions each week. The basic HIIT strategy is to have one brief burst of intense exercise followed by a moderate and longer "recovery" exercise. I've seen different ratios from different sports. So, I am doing one minute bursts with three minute recovery exercise for twenty minutes. I am adding this on to a 60 minute aerobic/strengthening session from my dvd collection (all livingroom workouts). I do aerobic sessoins at home five times daily (four of which include strengthening).

Various specialty websites recommend only two HIIT per week. I didn't see that until after my 3xweek workouts. I'll cut down to Saturday and Wednesday only. I only have a week left of weight loss then transition over to maintenance. I've also been trying different types of exercise that increases endurance (http://www.sport-fitness-advisor.com...-training.html).

Would love to hear what other's might being doing and trade ideas.

New and with a specific problem
August 15, 2009 at 11:41 am

Hi everyone!

I'm Denise, 22 and I joined this forum because I really need to do something about my body but I don't know where to start.

Okay so I've been exercising a lot lately and I really thought I was making progress until I read the article Why Exercise Won't Make You Thin (TIME magazine) and now I feel extremely depressed. I felt like I wasted my time thinking I could actually lose my belly fat through exercise. It's all just a scam. I really wasted my time.

My problem is that I am not overweight. My weight is within the BMI but I have a very round belly that sticks out all the time. I look permanently pregnant. I can't even hide it and some guys tease me about it. My body has always been like this since I was a kid.

I know exercise has other benefits but losing my belly fat is the only thing I am aiming for. Hopefully, I can find other ways in this forum and learn from other people.

Health Issues and Weight Loss Anxiety
August 15, 2009 at 10:50 am

Hello Everyone.

I went to the doctor initially for abdominal pain and my white blood count came back low last week. I just got blood drawn to test for autoimmune stuff, but have yet to be diagnosed. Yesterday I found some small painful lumps in my neck, right around the same spot I had a thyroglossal cyst in high school.

In April I cut out sugar and flour. I started 2009 at 212 and weighed in at 181.3 on Friday. This is with minimal exercise.

I also started OA at the same time, so I know my eating and thinking about food has changed in other ways too.

On one hand I am happy about the weight loss, but on the other hand it is hard for me not to panic that maybe I am not losing weight because of dietary changes, but because of illness.

Could it be that now that I am a lot smaller, my top weight was 235, I feel better and my increased everyday movement- parking further from the store, not laying around all day...is making the weight come off faster than before with less effort?

I didn't think I would freak out so much about losing weight.

Has anyone else experienced panic and anxiety about their loss?

Ladies @ The Gym! Share Your Workouts!
August 15, 2009 at 10:40 am

Lately I have been all about the gym. My favorite machine is the elliptical but I heard that it's much better to switch around machines so you can continue to work different parts of your body. I have a good time looking at really hot guys lifting weights while I'm doing cardio, but I often get bored. Even when I try to switch it around I think...how am I going to keep doing this?

I guess one of my favorite gym workouts is
1 hour elliptical
30 min. stairstepper

Ladies can you please post your gym workouts? I need some new things to try!

Gracias!

Hi, I'm new here
August 14, 2009 at 11:44 pm

My name's Kayla and I'm only 18.
Um I've been dieting for a little over two months now and lost about 13 pounds so far but now I'll be starting Weight Watchers. It's amazing I've gone this far without really following a plan.
Anyway, any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciate! :D

Newbie from New York City!!
August 14, 2009 at 11:10 pm

Greetings everyone,
I am brand new to this site and this forum. I'm introducing myself as suggeszted. I've struggled with my weight since I was a child. I'm 25 now. I had great success on Weight Watchers in 2003-2005. After I lost 30 lbs and got down to my all time low weight of 135 lbs, I slowly gained it all back and some up until this year around this time.

I had two liposuction surgeries in January and April of this year and removed 6liters of fat from my body. I lost 0 lbs since my two surgeries. So, I am trying to lose weigh, tone and tighten myself. Plastic surgery is anything but a quick fix, let me tell you.

I hope to hear from anyone =)

Blessings,
EMILY

i've been stuck at losing weight
August 14, 2009 at 10:55 pm

i didn't know Lithium could cause a person to be this way. i've recently been weening myself off with a Dr's help. i am on Abilify now.

Does lithium really make it hard to lose weight?

What Are Some Of Your Favorite Foods (Revamped of course)
August 14, 2009 at 10:55 pm

I was thinking about how I could revamp some of my old favorites and turn them into new healthy favorites.

Have you done this to any of your old faves? If so tell me about it.

Hello ladies and gents
August 14, 2009 at 10:50 pm

Maybe, just maybe, this is the time for me to make some progress? i hope so. i also hope this is a place of peace, somewhere i can come to find some calm and positive feelings.

It's nice to meet all of you.

OMG! Fried Bologna Sammiches!!
August 14, 2009 at 10:30 pm

I never knew bologna came fat free until I was looking at the hungry girl site. I have always loved fried bologna sammiches.

I dunno how many calories is in a regular fried bologna that I would ordinarily make, I'm sure its a motherload.

I went to the grocery store to pick up some today, I couldn't wait to try it. :D

So it's what I had for supper tonight.

2 slices Natures own honey wheat light toasted (80 cal)
2 slices fried bologna (pan fried in a nonstick pan with a bit of canola pam spray) (40 cal)
1 tbsp Hellmans low fat mayo (15 cal)
2 tsp yellow mustard (0 cal)
1 slice fat free american cheese (30 cal)
42 g romaine lettuce (10 cal)

175 total calories for my sammich and it was yummy! :carrot:

This isn't something I will have all the time because I can see that it could pose a problem for me. But it sure is nice to have something to fall back on that's one of my favorites.

yup, im trying to get off the pity party train!
August 14, 2009 at 10:09 pm

What an awful feeling! I somehow hopped on the pity party train yesterday! I'm been trying to stay motivated and happy but just can't seem to do it.

TOM is lurking around the corner so maybe that's part of the way I'm feeling. The other part is my back! I'm happy that its almost in, but its just that darn back spasm that won't give way. Plus, I'm still coughing so that doesn't help. I'm constantly running to the bathroom at night due to the coughing and it doesn't let my back rest to get rid of the spasm. Ugh. I feel so out of control the last couple of days. Today, I have into temptation and indulged in a chocolate tart at starbucks (unfortunately, it wasn't as good as it looked). I went over my points and have no flex points till weigh in. I know this is a minor bump in my journey but I guess I just wanted to get it off my chest and move on. Tomorrow is a new day right?

What do you all do when you feel like this?

Thanks for listening to me rant and rave

I am so excited to have just found this thread!
August 14, 2009 at 9:36 pm

I'm not sure if it is okay to post on here, but I didn't see a place for vegetarian chick intros. If this is in the wrong place just let me know and/or move it!

Anyways, I am so excited to just see this thread! I am the only vegetarian I know in my life, and I haven't really found alot on vegetarian dieting online, so stumbling onto this thread today was awesome! I didn't even think a vegetarian group existed on here, so I didn't even think to look! It seems that vegetarians are supposed to all be skinny or something. I would probably fall into that category more if I didn't pile the veggies on a cheese laden pizza that I then dipped into a tub of garlicky butter sauce or put them in a alfredo pasta with a loaf of bread on the side. I think you see my point. Stupid yummy carbs....

I have been trying to lose weight for awhile now. Long story short, I gained 100 pounds during my pregnancy. After my daughter was born 2 years ago, I was told that the weight would come off during breastfeeding....which did not happen. I ate sensibly, but kept it around 2000 cal a day, as that was what I was told you were supposed to do when bf. Even with a bunch of exercising, nothing happened, so I got discouraged and went back to pizza and ice cream. Finally, I couldn't handle being this overweight anymore, so about 5 months ago, I tried lowering my calories to 1500, still with hardly any results, even though I was bikeriding every day while towing daughter in a trailer. Last month, I decided daughter had been nursing for over 2 years, and I really needed to do something drastic, so I cut calories to 1200-1500 and FINALLY started seeing results.

I have lost about 40 pounds so far since June 22 and have gone from a size 24 to a size 20/22. I was wondering if other vegetarians who are dieting with success or are now maintaining have any tips? I have read that soy can deter weight loss and was wondering what others know or have experienced? I do alot of soy during the day, and don't want this to come back and bite me in the bum in the long run. I know the basics--eat lots of fruit/veggies, avoid too much fat, etc. But was wondering what else you veggies got!

So here I am, trying yet again to lose weight (Lithium & Hypothyroidism not helping!)
August 14, 2009 at 8:33 pm

Hi Guys,

Wow my very first post. I feel so brave. I was scared of writing this introduction post as that would mean I would really be making my little plan real and it's amazing how you can find ways to procrastinate!

I need to lose just over 20lbs to get back to my 'natural' weight. My weight gain has happened over the past few years due to my emotional eating because of depression, long-term lithium treatment and hypothyroidism (brought on my the lithium - damn you!). I really am scared that, if I don't learn a new way of viewing food and eating, that my weight will get to a very unhealthy point and I really don't need more issues!. :dizzy:

So this is me saying hi!! As my weight is closely related to my depression I find it hard to chat about it with friends. The main reason I seem to fail my own little diets is that I lack support or motivation so I remember reading about this forum and thinking it would be great to feel part of a team with the same goal. I hope I will learn a lot from your experiences as I have done already (yes... I confess I secretly lurked for a few days!)

So count me in for the ride! :carrot:

Getting sick of the food
August 14, 2009 at 8:17 pm

Target HR not high enough?
August 14, 2009 at 8:14 pm

Hello all! I recently purchased a HRM (a Polar F4) and after plugging in all the info and figuring out what my target HR should be, I put it to use. I am currently doing C25K and HIIT 3X a week (alternating days) and I was surprised when my watch started beeping at me, signaling I was over my target HR. I really didn't feel like I was working all that hard and just kept going at my normal pace (which put my HR between 170-180, my target HR is 119-156).

So today during my HIIT workout I made a real effort to slow it down to keep within my target and I had a hard time doing so. I felt like I was barely working and yet my heart rate still went above my target HR.

My question is, should I just ignore the target HR zone and keep judging my workouts based on how I feel or should I keep slowing things down to stay within my zone? I know that figuring your target HR is more of an estimate and if I really want to know exactly what it is I should schedule a visit with my dr, but I was curious if anyone else experiences this and if so, have you changed the intensity of your workouts or kept them the same?

Thanks so much in advance for any input! :)

best fiber supplement?
August 14, 2009 at 7:16 pm

i know that its supposed to be best to get your fiber via foods, but im wondering what the best source of fiber otherwise is. i know there are pills and drinks and supplements, but i dont know much about them. im hoping to find a supplement that will help with regularity as well as help increase fiber intake without causing unpleasant side effects (cramping, gas, etc)

Fla. doc fired over 'doughnuts equal death' sign
August 14, 2009 at 6:58 pm

Saw this in the news today:

I can't believe the Florida Health Department would fire a physician for speaking out against the junk that our society is overridden with. I say more power to him. That's exactly the kind of message healthcare professionals need to get out there, without worrying about stepping on someone's toes.

remeron/xanax/and anxiety in general
August 14, 2009 at 6:58 pm

i have suffered from severe panic attacks and general anxiety disorder since i was 14. a few things, first of all, im on remeron for sleep. a few years after being on this, my doctor told me that patients gain around 5lbs/year while taking it. (thanks for waiting til id been on it for FIVE years to tell me). i also have heard that xanax causes weight gain. im wondering if anyone on this medication has had similar experiences?

also, my mom and i got in an argument last night and i ruined my whole day by stuffing my face. ive noticed as i diet that anxiety tends to rule over motivation and that when i get anxious, i eat. is this a problem for anyone else?

the internet keeps confusing me
August 14, 2009 at 6:34 pm

ok, so i posted yesterday that im getting really frustrated by my weight loss stalls. heres a recent rundown

last week - 0 lost
week before - 2.4 lost
week before - 0 lost
week before - 1.4 lost

this cycle has been going on for about 2 months. im totaling about 4lbs/month. i am a FASTIDIOUS calorie counter and i havent been changing my routine, yet im all over the map. i never know what to expect. i posted my rant yesterday and several girls said that 1000 calories/day is too low and i need to bump up to 1200 because of "starvation mode". i looked further into this today and most of the websites i found said that its a myth. they said that to go into "starvation" or "famine" mode, you need to be eating about 1/2 your bmr, which for me would be like 700 cal/day, and that even then, you would still lose weight every week, just at a slower pace. i was feeling better yesterday like i might FINALLY have an answer, but now the internet has confused me and im not sure to up my calories or lower them again. any thoughts??

Well whaddya know...
August 14, 2009 at 6:17 pm

...I've always heard of those mysterious people who go from super addicted to sweets/carbs to having no cravings for them. I've also heard about people who go from never eating veggies (willingly) to craving them and actually enjoying them.

Well girls, despite years of laughing at the notion that these types of people exist...it turns out I'm one of them!

It took over 4 months of eating healthy and trying new things but I have kicked the sugar cravings and have developed a taste for veggies! Even the one veggie I swore I'd never like, well, really it's a fruit, but you get the idea--Tomatoes!!! My mother is so proud! :D I throw veggies in everything! And I don't gag at the thought of trying dishes with tons of veggies in them whereas before, I'd nix them instantly. :carrot:

Anyway, that is all. Just wanted to show that miracles really do happen in the weight loss world! :)

Super excited .. (update from my previous post)
August 14, 2009 at 6:07 pm

So in my last post from the other day i expressed my hatred for the elliptical and i simply couldn't stand it .. well the Y like i mentioned just did a 6 million dollar upgrade and got all this new equipment .. well the new (what they call) elliptical machine is horrible its like climbing stairs .. thats what i could only do like 5 mins and burned 20 cal on .. today i went down stairs to the old gym where they still have all the old equip .. got on that elliptical and rocked it .. i started out and after 3 mins i looked down and seen i had burned 50 cal (for some reason i like to go by what i burn not minutes lol is that strange??) i was like you can do another 50 and before i knew it i was cooling down and made it to a whopping 180 cal burned in 14 mins :carrot: :carrot: :carrot: i wanted to keep going but i needed to get my daughter from dance class .. the stupid Y changed child watch hours and they dont have Friday evening hours .. lucky for me i took my niece and i sent her into the pool w/ Nicholas .. i can't wait to go back now .. lol i was gonna break for the weekend cuz i had went M-Tue-W-F but I'm thinking of getting up and going on the morning :) .. sorry for the long post im just SO proud of myself .. this is such a huge accomplishment i suffer from anxiety and one of the things that I have a hard time with is working out and i dont like to see my heart rate but i did it and i kept it between 180 and 185 which i think is high but im a big girl :) and i need to expect that for now!! oh and did i mention i had to listen to a screaming child the whole time .. a parent was waiting for their child in the dance class and her son i guess didnt want to be there he screamed and cried the whole time .. talk about stress lol

Flying and weight?
August 14, 2009 at 5:56 pm

I have heard that taking long plane flights causes you to retain water and therefore possibly gain weight. Is this true? I definitely bloat and swell when I fly, I can't even fit into my shoes :(.

Also, my scale magically switched to kilograms. Going to change my ticker while I'm abroad so I don't have to keep doing caculations :D

Withdrawals
August 14, 2009 at 5:44 pm

Tuesday I made the decision to cut out sweets and things like fast food. I have done pretty well, but I didn't realize that doing this includes having withdrawals. Of course I am always hungry, but I am moody, tired all the time, have a headache, and a woozy feeling at times.

I've read up on this a little bit and found that it is possible. You can be addicted to sugar and carbohydrates like others are to cigarettes, alcohol, or drugs. Of course the symptoms aren't as bad, but they are definatley there.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Is there a connection between having an Appendectomy and being overweight?
August 14, 2009 at 4:58 pm

I was looking through old photos of myself and wondering this. I was a thin child and got my apendix taken out shortly before my 6th birthday. Almost immediately thereafter I gained a LOT of weight for a child that age and have been battling with it my whole life....

What do you think?

Keeping Weight Off on Vacay
August 14, 2009 at 4:28 pm

Hey, everybody! So, I'm off on a three-week vacation to visit my dad down south and then my friend up north. I was wondering if anybody had any tips on how to keep weight loss in mind on trips like these? I find that I tend to go crazy eating out when I'm away on vacation, and even though keeping a food journal helps a little, I'm not exercising in the way I'm used to and can't anticipate as well when I'll be hungry, so I just eat a TON and suffer for it on the scale. How do you keep yourself on track away from home?

Hey guys, I've been MIA, but still On Plan
August 14, 2009 at 3:51 pm

I've been kinda scarce around here. I've been wanting to contribute more, just haven't had time. ( I know, gotta make time, or just have the world make 30 hours in a day )

Fun News: My sister had a baby girl, and made me a first time Aunt. I am also the Godmother, and can't keep cuddling her. She is absolutely adorable.

Bad News: I have been to the gym once since Monday ( the day my sister had Whitney ) I've been visiting my sister every day since she was in the hospital of the same city I work in. I would stay for hours too, just to hold the little bundle of joy.

So, I finally went to the gym last night. Only did 30 minutes on the eliptical and then some weights, hope to make it to the gym again tonight and at least once over the weekend. Food has been fairly good as well. Trying to stay within 1600 calories a day. I haven't gained any but also haven't lost any. I want to be in the 180's so darn bad!

Anyway, just wanted to update everyone. Hope to get back into the full swing of things starting now, and get to posting with all of you on a daily basis again.

Can I dothis?
August 14, 2009 at 3:49 pm

My name is Carol, and I live in central Missouri. If I had a nickel for every time I started a diet, I would be the richest woman on the planet. I'm the heaviest I've ever been weighing in at 215. J
ust four years ago, I was a svelte 147 lbs., but many things occurred that lead to the regain of weight plus 15 lbs. more.
I'm wondering if I can do this yet again and, honestly, and not too hopeful. I know I shouldn't start out with a negative attitude, but I have had the tools necessary before and haven't gotten the job done. I tend to be very perfectionistic and have an all or nothing attitude which doesn't help.
I can't afford to give up on myself as I know I won't be happy if I stay at this weight.
Any encouragement will be much appreciated and would love to have someone that is interested in emailing daily.

Carol

3rd times a charm!
August 14, 2009 at 3:39 pm

Hi I am new here!!

I currently started South Beach for the 3rd (serious) time. The first two attempt ended 3 months after I started. I was super please with the consistent weight lose and quick results just in the first two weeks.

To be honest the first time I used this diet was in hope of getting pregnant after years and years of trying. I have PCOS and all other Dr. perscribed attempts had failed. Low and be hold 3 months into South Beach I was pregnant! After my daughters birth (now 3) I decided to start the diet to lose weight. Surprise 3 months later I got pregnant again. After the birth of my son (now 2) I didn't have the energy to give it my all.

Over the past two year I have had some minor fluctuations in my weigh. Sadly I have now let my weigh become the highest it had ever been.

August 13th 2009 begins a new chapter in my life and I am determined to work hard and eat right until I hit my goal!

I am going to track my progress through out with posted pictures! Stay in tuned for my oh so dreaded before picture.

Scale dilemma
August 14, 2009 at 2:34 pm

So I've been weighing myself on my moms scale. Yesterday, I weighed myself and it said 240. A one pound gain. A little later I weighed again and it was 239, then 240, then 237. ????!

I then decided to buy a new scale for my apartment. Found a digital one for like.. 18 dollars. :) I weighed last night and it was 239, so no gain or loss.

Today is my official weigh in day, and I weighed after I woke up and went potty. I weighed, and what did I get? 237.

So. All that being said, I'm not sure what number I should go with. I typically weigh in the afternoon so I know that's probably why it says 2 lbs down. Should I take that number and just continue to weight myself in the morning from now on? Or should I just say nothing lost nothing gained this week?

I'm probably focusing too much on the numbers, but either way I'll be fine. Today is my weigh in day for the blog & I have to report SOME number... just not sure which. Ha. Thanks for your opinion :)

My sweet tooth
August 14, 2009 at 1:46 pm

I have huge weakness for sweets, I can just live eating sweet stuff and it has always been my biggest hurdle while on diet. I always find people around me who complain about uneasiness after eating sweets and sometimes I use to wish that happens to me too. At least it will bring my sweet tooth to some control.

Guess what?? It seems to be happening now!! I had donut for breakfast today and my stomach is aching now ( but I am happy :carrot:). I wish it happen again next time I have sweets, not sure if it is a good thing to wish for :D

August 14, 2009 at 1:45 pm

Hello all! My name is Nikki, I am 31 and I am ready to change my life. I am looking for support in my long journey to a healthy lifestyle. I have been overweight for a long time, now I am ready to move forward and lose this weight. :carrot: I am a little nervous because I have always failed before, but I can't fail this time. I am not going to fail! I know I will have ups and downs, but hopefully with the support of my brothers, this forum and God I will reach my goal to healthy living.

Active Folks Over Fifty -- #27
August 14, 2009 at 1:41 pm

Hey! Did you all make it over?

-------------
Active Folks Over 50 is a place to talk about fitness and healthy eating information as it relates to weight loss and/or maintenance--and also about any work, fun, hobby, or volunteer activites you're engaged in. In other words, the active part of your life!

Just a few guidelines for this thread:

- Raves about grandkids or ranting about your kids is out of bounds.

- Lengthy discussion of your illnesses, conditions, treatments, and medical procedures in general is also out of bounds on this thread. So is whining about old age!

- Positive stories of vacations taken, volunteer work, or achievements at work or elsewhere are highly encouraged! As are recommendations for books, movies, discussions of weight related issues, etc.

Join in!

I hope more of our regulars check in again soon...

Is anyone here a Nevada Barr mystery fan? Her protagonist is a park ranger named Anna Pigeon.

Rut-ROH... VLC diet time for us...
August 14, 2009 at 1:11 pm

OMG we went for pre-op yesterday.

we both gained like 11 pounds. they were NOT happy.

'cept their parting words to us at our last meeting was "you are good to go now TRY not to gain too much back"

oh well... please. I have food issues. I know this is not magic but I wanted my last hurrah!

nope. not happening.

Brian has to lose at least 5 pounds by MONDAY. (well since he had heavy jeans and a belt on it won't be too hard)

I need to lose 11 in 4 weeks.

ugh.

Back again!!
August 14, 2009 at 1:04 pm

Hi there,
Well I was here about a year ago. Now here I am again actually 25 pounds heavier than I was last time. I can't say that anything really happened to make me gain back and then some. I just simply gave up trying.

But here I sit ready to give this another go. I have a weight loss goal of 115 pounds so I really need this. I have decided to really try the right way this time. No fad diets and no miracle pills. Just cooking light with smaller portions and old fashioned hard work and exercise. My 3 kids will be back in school on the 24th so I can start using my gym membership again. It really is pathetic I have had it since January of this year and I can count on my Hands how many times I have been. I look forward to meeting all of you.

Losing respect for Jillian....
August 14, 2009 at 12:47 pm

As I'm checking my email this morning, something GNC sent me catches my eye: "New Jillian Michaels Diet Pills!" .....HUH?....:listen: I shake off the shock and click on the link to find that She now has a "fat burner" "Calorie control" and "body detox." I really could have sworn that in her books she preaches about how most diet pills aren't safe and most don't work. So why oh why would she put her name on some? I googled the pills and found this link

http://www.dietpills.org/diet-pill-r...t-loss-program

I'm a bit dissappointed in her...

Reason to eat #739: my kid killed the class salamander
August 14, 2009 at 12:37 pm

We've been taking care of the class pet all summer, a tiger salamander. No problems, very low maintenance. Last night my 11 year old was changing the water in the aquarium, and she put the salamander in the sink, because he has to be wet at all times. She left the water in the sink running and when she came back a minute later, the water was hot-- she had accidentally scalded the poor thing. He seemed to recover ok, we got him in the right temperature water right away, and he seemed to be his old self, but when I woke up this morning he was dead. On top of that he's a rare tiger salamander and can't be replaced because he's indigenous around here.

I feel like total crap. I left a voice mail with the teacher this morning and DREAD having to tell her. I'd like to eat a quart of ice cream to numb out these feelings. I guess I can only hope that my two younger kids don't have her for a teacher, or that she wasn't too attached to the salamander.

Figured out one of my "glitches"
August 14, 2009 at 12:28 pm

So about 2 weeks ago, I was having a heart to heart with myself.. doing some mental probing and it occured to me that I LOVE food (all of us do right?). I love the tastes of foods, the textures of some, and sometimes the "good feelings" that they can bring. I know to make this lifetime change work for me I can not tell myself I can never eat chocolate cake ever again, or I can't eat macaroni salad or I can't eat red meat. I have to learn to eat what ever I want, just in small, calculated portions. Ok.. this is all well and good and I can do that.

What I can't do.. slow down while I'm eating what ever it is that I'm enjoying at the moment. I'm not even sure how to put this into words to make it make sense... but I'll try. I think the reason I have spent sooooo many years over eating is becuase I will eat something that I enjoy eating and instead of eating it nice and slow and enjoying the taste for a while, I scarf it down and then want to enjoy more of that flavor so I will eat more of it.. sometimes up to 4 or 5 servings of that one thing.

I have not let myself just keep going back for more for over 3 weeks now... but I still find that I have scarfed down whatever it is that I'm eating and not enjoyed it like I could have if I would have slowed down and thought about the enjoyment I was getting from it. I end up being done with my meal or snack and sitting there thinking "Man, I wish I would have tasted that".

I guess I should put a sign on my fridge... "Slow down Sommer, there is no race to finish that plate".

p90x or Tony Horton's 10 min trainer??
August 14, 2009 at 12:28 pm

I NEED TO WORKOUT!! But I just don't know what to invest in! Has anyone tried the p90x program or Tony Horton's 10 minute trainer?? Slim in 6?? If so how did you like it? Does the program work? I am a beginner so I need something that is going to ease me into the routine.

Also I've been seeing the Ab Circle Pro on TV and I just wanted to hear some feedback before I spent a great deal of money on any one product!

Thanks,
Kayla

totally embarrassing question (tmi warning)
August 14, 2009 at 12:22 pm

feel free to disregard this post if you're easily affected by oversharing, but i was just wondering if anyone else had any issues with your, um, digestional tract? some "backside effects," if you will? i feel like my poo cycle is all kinds of out of whack, from going a few days without pooing to having episodes of diarrhea, and it's quite unpleasant. am i just delicate, or does someone else share my issues? :o

Ab Circle Pro??
